Can I create new color palette from image?

#1

In Painter (Corel)I have an option to create a new color set from the opened image. It tends to create far too many colors in the process.

Is there a way to do this in Photoshop CS4 other than creating a single new swatch manually selecting colors from the image?

Thanks for any help with this.

yes

  1. open image you want to extract palette from
  2. go to “savet for web and devices”
  3. choose GIF, and the count of colors you want in your palette
  4. click the little arrow beside “color table” and choose “save color table”
  5. you’re done

extra: you also have an option to sort the palette by “popularity”, “luminance”, “hue” or just keep it unsorted

here’s a SS. have fun

Thanks for that…sure appreciate your taking the time. I have found another way also.

Go to Mode>Indexed Color and with Diffuse set to “Diffusion”, check “Preserve Exact Color” and you can specify the Number of Colors.

Then Click “OK.”

Goto Mode again and save the palette.

Your way might be simpler.

Thanks again for taking the time to post this information.

actually, if you go to “index color” and choose “custom” in palette you can save it at once
but there you don’t have the extra options i pointed out

anyway, glad you found a solution to your problem. cheers

likewise…thank you!

If you want to limit the colors, you can first make a duplicate layer of the image, then try one of these filters under Pixelate:

Crystallize - Produces more saturated colors
Mosaic - Less saturated, wider tonal variation
Pointilize - More saturated, tends to look more like web swatches

You can also combine a Gaussian blur before any of these with mixed results. However, you will still need to follow the indexing methods you discussed above to automagically capture the palette.

This software is a cool little tool along the same subject lines. I find it most useful if your trying to come up with your own color scheme from scratch. It does have tools for extracting a pallete from an image as well as exporting to a Photoshop usable palette.
