Camera tracking in Maya

#1

Hi. I was going between posting this here or in the Maya thread, but I figured either one would be good.

I would like to get into some visual effects work and I am looking over the features and trying to see what I can use based on the software I have availible.

Right now I have Maya 2012 (student version) and I know it has camera trcking in it, so I’m wondering how well it will work compared to all the main tracking software like Boujou or what’s in NUKEX. (I only have a PLE version of NUKE so it doesn’t have that function.) I also have Sony Vegas as well. I was thinking of shooting a test scene of some 3D shapes just falling into my room, but I was having a problem finding something that could track the camera. Seeing as Maya does have a tracking thing in it, do I need Nuke at all? I can create the shapes in Maya. I also wanted to do some things with the special effects in Maya such as those explosion and firework presets and stuff. If Maya can do camera tracking, then I should be able to composite that into the real footage in Sony Vegas, correct?

Any guidance or thoughts on this are appreciated. If I’m missing something, please let me know.

Thanks.
