What is the easiest way to get a c4d model into Maya?
FBX exporter, it’ll even keep the hierarchy intact for you. Just mind the scale in the export options in C4D’s prefs.

I tried exporting it as fbx before but Maya (free learning edition btw) didn’t recognize the file type. Is fbx exporter a plugin, or where can I find it?
Yeah, working with the PLE (free learning edition) is going to limit you immensely… I believe the PLE only imports/recognizes maya binary (.mb) and maya ascii (.ma) besides it’s own proprietary format.
