Brushes too powerful?

#1

Hello,

I’m currently evaluating mudbox and I notice that if I simply start with the default head object and do nothing other than simply start to sculpt the brushes seem way too powerful.

For example, if I select the smooth brush and then smooth the object the bush nearly melts all the detail off the object in a single stroke, so way too much amplitude.

I’ve got to use very low values such as 0.01 or such like to get reasonable behavior.

I reckon that this might have something to do with the scale of the object, it seems that if I scale up the object before starting any sculpting then then the brushes seem to behave more normally.

So is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

If so, is there some recommended standard object size when working inside of mudbox…in terms of mudbox grid units?

Sorry for the noob question, but I’ve just started looking into mudbox.

Cheers,

J

hi joe…

yes object size is important in mud...
if i work on the mud basehead i use a low smooth setting like you mentioned...
the smooth brush is also level independend...
in higher levels you need more strength...

scaling up your object is no good idea…

and if i work with a base mesh out of maya i import the mudbox base human as guide to maya...

a little trick is to dubleklick the slider…
slide down to about 2 and doubleklick the handle… so the new highest value is 2…
if you want 100 back type it in per hand…

Hi Christoph,

Thanks I’m not going crazy then  Thanks for the tips, they are very helpful. I’m looking forward to learning more about mudbox!

Christoph, this tip is worth its weigh in gold, thanks a lot.

For some reason the strength value of my paint brush was set to 1000, which basically made it impossible to do fine adjustments at the lower range. I finally was able to reset it to 100
