Brush properties - can you control interactively?

#1

Hi all,
I have a question about the brush controls/properties. I just finished my first project and attached a picture. It is nothing great just my first attempt. It is for a charity that collects and gives away coats to the less fortunate.

I was wondering some things. I created the strokes with the pen tool and then applied a stroke path. Sometimes it was fine but more often than not I had to go back and readjust things like the brush tip shape, shape dynamics (more specifically the control>fade>#). My question is, is there a way that once you apply the stroke path that you can go into the brush settings and adjust it interactively instead of using my trial and error method?

Thanks!

In Photoshop, not that I know of.

Pesto, try SAI. it does exactly what you want. you can change thickness in different places, correct the points etc. it’s pretty awesome for line-art

For this sort of drawing/inking you would be better off to do the work in an illustration app, such as Illustrator, Inkscape or Expression.

I really like Expression 3.3 - very powerful, and free (if you can find the download).
Mac version here: http://mac.brothersoft.com/microsoft-expression.html
The Windows version (and mac version) can hopefully still be downloaded at the M$ site:
http://www.microsoft.com/Expression/expression-design/Download.aspx

You will need a hotmail account, though. :frowning: Expression is one of those ‘lost, but not forgotten software treasures’ of the past. Interface takes some getting used to.

Or use Inkscape - very nice stroke control. http://www.inkscape.org/
When you finish your inking, import the drawing into Photoshop.

OOPS, forgot, my favourite drawing app of the moment: Mypaint - it allows you to change your last stroke interactively. And it is bitmap based. Free and open source: http://mypaint.intilinux.com/
@Creeto: thanks for the heads up on Sai - testing it now. Looks nice.

i love the unique features of SAI so i did a little tutorial video for those who are interested in the line-art
unfortunately my audio setup is still down so it’s without comments but i hope you’ll enjoy it anyway

better quality if downloaded

Back before Expression was an MS app it allowed for per node width control. Is that still in there and I just can’t find it? Did they strip out the one thing that made it awesome (after Illustrator added cool brushes, that is ;-)?

In fact this site is unofficial, the real site is Systemax.jp

I repost those videos about SAI since it was recommended by Creeto (I think a real example can be better especially with added explanations...and maybe also because I spent two days making those videos :D )

-the first video (7'35") shows you line creation process using vector line just like raster line (you can use vector for the most complicated curve and merge to raster at any moment)

-the second video (10’00") shows color filling process which is more effective than what is inside Photoshop at the moment (it is explained in the video). The video shows also an amazing way to control gradient especially good for cartoon work (technical demo here and there).

Anyway, I am not sure about your real needs since your attached image suggest an Illustrator/Expression/Inkscape true vector needs so I am joining hvanderwegen recommendations also

Microsoft Bought Creature House few years ago and renamed Creature House Expression to Acrylic in 2005. There was a beta and…nothing else. Wikipedia says Acrylic was the codename of Microsoft Expression Design but I tested Acrylic and that was a different program

Hecartha, thanks for the data.

I really like Sai - quite amazing for inking. And Expression 3.3 still is an awesome vector drawing app, IF you can find it online.
