Bring It On!

#3

And its for Electric Image!

it seems like a new plugin/shader?

#4

Perhaps something like this?

#5

Hum… Paralumino was registered in L.A. on april 28…
What’s cooking Brian…? Plug? training? Free beer?

#6

ummmmm…

Interesting. Sounds a bit latin?? ‘Prepared Light’ maybe??

The really interseting things is the prospect of another 3rd party developer?

ta

nige.

#7

Yeah that’s right. . . I admit it, I took four years of Latin. I’m a geek!

Wow. That felt good getting that off my chest.

The sad thing is I didn’t really pay attention in Latin class but I’ll try to decode this plugin’s name:

PARA – means “outside of” or “beyond the norm”

and

LUMINO – I guess is related to “luminae” – to illuminate or “lux” – light

so

My guess is that this is a lighting plugin. Possibly a TRUE HDRI lighing system. Huh? What do you think?

#8

I think that Para means beside or next to and Lumino means to light up (as in self illuminate).
That and the logo on the splash page leads me to believe it is a glow shader based on geometry.

#9

Para is from the greek. It can be interpreted as: alongside of, beside, near, resembling, beyond, apart from.

We tend to like the meaning “Beyond”

As for lumino…well that’s pretty self explanitory. Light or to light up.

So… do you think a glow shader would have a website all its own?

#10

That was from memory, I recall (again from a dim past) para is both latin and greek

Googling it I found that the (more) modern definitions are particularly far flung:

Para
n 1: (obstetrics) the number of live-born children a woman has
delivered; “the parity of the mother must be
considered”; “a bipara is a woman who has given birth to
two children” [syn: parity]
2: 100 para equal 1 dinar
3: a soldier in the paratroops [syn: paratrooper]
4: an estuary in northern Brazil into which the Tocantins River
flows [syn: Para, Para River]

Source: Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Par’a \Pa*r['a]", n.

  1. The southern arm of the Amazon in Brazil; also, a seaport
    on this arm.

  2. Short for Par['a] rubber.
    Para \Pa*ra", n. [Turk., fr. Per. p[=a]rah a piece.]
A piece of Turkish money, usually copper, the fortieth part
of a piaster, or about one ninth of a cent.
Para- \Par"a-\ [Gr. ? beside; prob. akin to E. for- in forgive.
    Cf. For-.]

  3. A prefix signifying alongside of, beside, beyond, against,
amiss; as parable, literally, a placing beside; paradox,
that which is contrary to opinion; parachronism.

  4. (Chem.) A prefix denoting:
    (a) Likeness, similarity, or connection, or that the
substance resembles, but is distinct from, that to the
name of which it is prefixed; as paraldehyde,
paraconine, etc.; also, an isomeric modification.
    (b) Specifically: (Organ. Chem.) That two groups or
radicals substituted in the benzene nucleus are
opposite, or in the respective positions 1 and 4; 2
and 5; or 3 and 6, as paraxylene; paroxybenzoic acid.
Cf. Ortho-, and Meta-. Also used adjectively.

And as far as a shader having a web site all it’s own. These days it takes less cash than a couple lattes at bucks and a trip to the library to get a website online, so the answer would be, sure why not?

Ok… I’ll bite: so what does it do?

#11

A new company, a web site, a store…
I smell something big…
I would guess Hardware accelerated Rendering.
Something like ARTVPS’s Pure card.

#12

I know! I know! It’s a John Knoll Button!

#13

Brought to you by Mr. Brian Pohl, the world renowned hardware engineer

Ian

#14

Ian, you bad boy… You are putting me down. I feel offended. Prepare yourself for a duel tonight in Heaton Park (South entrance)…

I know nothing about Brian’s background other than what I can read on the net.
Do you know I am a fireman…?

ARTVPS’s Pure PCI card works with Maya (which Brian uses) 3dsmax, VIZ and Catia.
It’s not impossible to convince these guys to make a RenderPipe Plugin for Electricimage and assume the risk of distribution.
If it is only another Plugin or training, why the secrecy?

#15

Now THAT would be super cool! Lens flares that actually look like lens flares and lighting schemes that can be adjusted on-the-fly! I’m still waiting for a fast and beautiful HDRI solution in EIAS. I’ve been experimenting with compositing different passes in Motion. But nothing’s really bringing it home just yet.

Maybe this plugin is meant to simulate discos and club scenes (I mean the '70s Charlie’s Angels logo treatment says it all, right?)

Then again, maybe it’s not a plugin at all. Maybe there’s a clue in the title of Brian’s initial post – “Bring it On!”

#16

It’s baked-on lighting, right? GI quality realtime lighting! What could be better for previsualizing?

“Bring it on.” It means you bring in (import) self-illuminated models and spaces into your scene! Texture-baking on stilts!

Yeah! This is big!

So, what do I win?

#17

Hehehe
Handbags at dawn and all that

I’m pretty sure you will find out what this is all about in the near future…
Ian

#18

OK, I got it…
A lightsaber distribution center! (To cut down render time…)
Come on Brian…bring it on.

#19

Ooooo…now that would be nice. ARTVPS Pure PCI card… but nope. That’s not it. Why all the secrecy? Oh because. I like making people guess. But in all seriousness…I’m all about seeing EI advance in the CG community. I started CG talk… what would be the next logical step? Don’t worry… it wont be much longer. I’m in Chicago on business…so when I get home I’ll fill you in on the details.

#20

I got it!

You’re going to help EITG buy out Autodesk for $250,000,000, right Brian?

Well, maybe that’s not the NEXT logical step but one day. . . .

#21

A bit of an under-valuation of Autodesk eh?.. Isn’t that about what they spend on a corporate lunch these days?

Ian

#22

I heard they get their lunches for free. Didn’t autodesk just buy out McDonalds?
