Break from DMP Challenges until the Fall

#1

Heyo All,

Due to certain circumstances, we’re having a moratorium on these monthly challenges until we can get it up and running again, probably back in September of 2015. I’d like to thank everyone for participating almost 1 year ago when our first challenge was posted in July. So many awesome entries and people learning in this forum. Also thanks to CGSociety for providing such great rewards as an extra incentive to the Top 3 winners of each month.

Milan and I don’t get compensated at all for holding these challenges or leading the forum, just the rewarding feeling that we are able to help and improve the DMP community at large when we are able to.

As always, feel free to post in the regular DMP forum here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=196

Please take this time to recharge yourselves, and have a spectacular summer break!

PS: May 2015’s winners will soon be posted!

Hey guys,

I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to David, Milan, and CGsociety for hosting this competition. You’ve helped me out more than you could know!

I wouldn’t have improved much if these challenges weren’t around, and without the friendly, and encouraging community. I really hope to see all you guys again in fall for round 2

Good luck to all in for May comp!
Have a great summer guys!

Best wishes,
Aaron

I also would like to thank you, David, Milan, CGSociety and also the other members for this great forum.

Unfortunately I only took part on the last two months, but this competition helped me improve a lot my skills and the community feel and feedbacks were very encouraging to keep on developing work.

I look forward to hear back from the group.

Kind Regards,
Felipe Izidro

I don’t know if someone remember me, but I took a part in first six DMP Challenges. After my last one (Kung Fu Flashback in December) I realized that deep in my heart I am (and I always was) more Illustrator than matte painter. But it doesn’t change a fact that these six months was my most effective learning time ever! Especially in the field of time managing and general workflow. I’ve also learned much much more than before in 3D field.

But first of all - EVERY Challenge was a truly great and pleasant time :). They have a place in my memories as one of the best moments in my artistic life. Truly - there are no words to express my gratitude to you David and Milan and to all fantastic people who took a part in this… You are all GREAT!

Best regards
Jonatan

P.S. Now I’m focused on other fields of art, but I really hope that these Challenges will continue in the future and we will meet again - I would like to manage some time to participate just to pure pleasure :). Miss you all…

Ditto from me guys - thanks for all the time spent helping others grow into this field.
might see you later in the year.

I’d like to echo what others have said:

Thank you David and thank you Milan for taking the time to organize these wonderful matte painting challenges. You guys do such a great job of conceptualizing & presenting the assignments and your final critiques are always an interesting and truly invaluable read. Definitely for someone like me who’s main hurtle has been simply learning to think cinematically in terms of context, time & story (as opposed to statically as a traditional fine artist creating a still image for its own sake). For this reason, I especially enjoyed those months where a hint of a script, a base plate, and/or a slightly more fleshed-out back story was provided as well, since it helps put things in context and brings a sense of working-world production realness to the competition. Hope that makes sense and you’ll please keep it in mind for future competitions.

Thank you also to the talented guest judges you invited to weigh in each month, and
thank you to all the amazing participating artists here! It’s all the good critical input, not the winning (or in my case the losing haha), that’s the valuable thing here.

Hope you can get the competition up and running again by Sept! Please do continue these challenges

“Build it and they will come.”

I haven’t competed yet in this challenge, but I would really like to when it returns!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone - everyone - as seeing the entrants WIP’s is as valuable to me as the fantastic people putting it on, and thanks to CGSociety for hosting!

I also want to join other guys and gals. This challange was an interesting to look at and to participate in. I am so glad there is a mattepainting community, which is so supportive and welcoming to everybody from all levels and backgrounds. I’ve certainly learned a lot here, so my huge thanks to Milan, David and all the people in this community.

Here is to another year of learning and lvl-up-ing  Cheers.
