BoomBox Breakdancing

#1

This is my clip of a breakdancing robot, wondering if anybody has any advice or critique. It is still a WIP so I’m not finished with it yet.

I dig it… The flip at the end is too slow, unless you want it to look slow motion. I think it’ll look nice fully rendered and with some crazy fast MTV style editing, quick zooms and camera moves. Also, it might just be me but I don’t like from 11 seconds on, it needs to end on a more badass note.

Hi,

I agree with bmiles about the ending. The robot seems to be off balance at around frame 200, then the flip then off balance again till the end.

Maybe you could keep it more in control and then make a jump in the air to “regroup” (as a boombox) then the boombox fall on the ground bouncing a little (very classic ending, but works).

hope it helps,

6ril.

I just watch you demoreel on vimeo, and if I may, I would make a general comment about your animation. I’m telling you because I think it the main flaw on you robot bbombox anim.

Weight.

I think all your animation lack it, the sense of weight. It’s a difficult part of animation, and it’s hard to describe it more then saying it’snot there.

Keep it up!

Thank you bmiles and CiF, i appreciate your comments and advice. I will definitely make the necessary arrangements on my boombox and reposting it soon

Also CiF, I am having a lot of problems with weight, i get the same comment from everybody who sees my reel. Compared to my reel though, even though you did say there was some weight problems, do you think it has some improvement though? Idk, I think I’m going to look to see if there is any tutorials for wieght in animation.

Frame 80 = Robot body should be MUCH farther over to the Right… to even his weight out.

Frame 99 = Same thing as above… but to the Left

Forward flip is WAYY to slow

Roll back is WAY to slow

Also… the very beginning where the robot turns into humanoid form… have the head SNAP open REAL FAST… so that it makes sense that the thing would jump into the air… it all happens to slow and looks like the head just floats up for no apparent reason. Or give it some Thrusters and your golden! hehe…

You got some good stuff in there though… just a few weight issues and some timing tweaks and your on your way.

Cheers

Thanks again!

Still seems a bit slow … especially the jumping parts.

Do this,

Go to youtube and download a gymnastics routine (using Keepvid or something)

Then load it into Quicktime and COUNT the FRAMES that it takes to do a jumping roll in the air. I am guessing its going to only be 5-ish frames… where you I think are in the 15 frame range I am guessing.

hope that helps.

beside the animation parts you need to adjust, I think you should start by correcting you camera. Almost half the screen (lower half) is unused. For the kind of movments you going for, it would help to have more room above the robot, then you could extend him better in jumps…

I agree with the other comments. Maybe it’s just me, or perhaps it’s synching issues on my computer, but it seems to me it’s not well timed to the music.

I have uploaded another update of the boombox.

http://vimeo.com/20149666

@Tabasco, I downloaded and studied some forward flips and applied it to the animation. The animation was slower than the reference, but I think I made it a bit too fast, maybe you can give me some more insight.

@CiF, I also adjusted the camera to even out the composition.

@tobbew, the music serves no purpose really besides giving some background noise so viewers are not watching in silence

I really appreciate the helpful critiques from you guys. I am a new animatior, and you guys are helping me alot.
