So I’m starting a sketchbook and I haven’t drawn in a while, either in digital or traditional media, so I’m starting off with just quick gesture sketches. These all took about 2 minutes and helped get rid of the slightly rusty feeling (got the idea from Rebeccak’s beginner’s lounge post which has been extremely helpful).

First real sketch

Hi and welcome to this wonderful area of the virtual world.

Check out Rebecca’s article on opposing curves if you like, it will surely help you in drawing gestures.

Can you tell us a bit about your background? Have you been drawing since long? Are you attending an art school maybe? What are your goals?

Things like that are always interesting

Hi NR43- My background is that I took art classes in highschool and had always drawn as a kid. I’ve got a few filled sketchbooks but I doodle more than seriously draw or paint. Most of my experience is with sculpture in clay and throwing on the wheel, I did that for two years in highschool. Basically for formal education I’ve had introductory drawing and art classes and basic pottery classes but that’s about it. Since then I’ve pretty much just done art for myself without actually pursuing it with any real plan. Lately I’ve been doing silkscreens and for some reason it drew me back to digital art. I’ve played around with a wacom tablet extensively and understand the basics of maya and 3ds max. But I’ve taught myself everything, so there are some obvious and gaping holes in what I know and am capable of. But I’ve found that for me it’s more rewarding to teach myself rather than pay someone.

And

This is
4-2 minute sketches followed by a longer sketch (don’t know how much time I spent on it, just went till I needed a break). The head and hands of this pose are giving me real problems.

So after about 2 months of crazy social/work life related stuff and a vacation somewhere in between I’ve finally had time to sit down and tinker with digital art some more. I seem to have hit a brick wall with human anatomy, at least when it comes to making 2d replicas of it. So on a friends reccomendation I got ZBrush and after playing around with it for a day or two in order to get used to the program I produced my first “sketch”. I’m thinking of trying to develop this idea further, but at the moment I stopped because I got stuck on what to do with the rest of the face below the mask. This was modeled from the basic sphere tool. Whatever I decide to do with this initial sketch, the next project is to try and do a human limb or even a head in ZBrush.

So this is the first head sketch, very very very basic.

Hi

you will get more comments and critique when you offer the same to the other forum members and visit their threads. It’s the good old unwritten “give to get” forum rule that applies to every forum on the web

Would love to see you drawing more…
Keep at it!

Hi NR43

If you’re still stuck with what to do with the head under the mask may I suggest taking the screen cap or render into photoshop and do some quick sketches over the model to generate some quick ideas. It helps me from time to time. Keep up the good work.

NR43: Thanks for the tips! Visiting other forum members threads isn’t an issue, it’s what I use for inspiration to keep myself motivated… Offering useful critiques is a little harder for me but I’ll try to start doing that.

Muttonman222: Thanks for the ideas I’ll try that out in painter tonight when I get home from work! (Oh and I’m Tasp =p)

I’ll have the next bit of progress on the human head up soon.

Great work, I like your quick sketches and that mask is also very good.

Thanks for the encouragement Sara

And here’s recent work from today, a little more refined

Touched up a little more, decided to make it smile this time

Now for the far off future when I finish modeling this, I’m going to want to texture it can anyone recommend some good ZBrush texturing tutorials? Or something for maya (would a UVW unwrap work well for this?)? Any help is appreciated!
