Bobby Chiu's Detroit Subway Sketch Group 2005

#1

As a refugee from the original Bobby Chiu’s Toronto sketch group, I thought it would be a good idea to start one up here in the Motor City. I don’t know if there are any CGTalkers from SE Michigan, so things might be slow at first. Once the Fall semester gets started at CCS, I hope to persuade some of my students to show up. If anyone has any better ideas for a meeting place, please let me know.

MEETING LOCATION: Great Lakes Crossing Mall in Auburn Hills, Michigan (1-75 and Baldwin Rd.) in the food court next to the Japan Cafe.
MEETING DAY: Sunday November 20, 3:00 PM
                  CONTACT PERSON: contact@tom-dow.com

MEETING NOTES: If you have AIM, I will be signed on as "paranthropusism".

Hey Tom! Great to see you starting it up in Detroit! We all miss ya up here in Toronto! I just added this link to my website

Here are some sketches from last Sunday. I showed up at around 3pm. There was nobody else, but I’d expected that. The mall food court cleared out pretty dramatically at around 4:30, so I think I’ll be scouting around for some other locations.

Paranthropus - Nice to meet you, I’m from the Detroit area. If your looking for more participants then a good start would be Oakland community college in Farmington. Every weekend they have life drawing sessions that are open to artist and I’m sure your could drum up interest there.

Depending on how my schedule fluctates I may attend one of your sessions

Thanks for the info, Kid Mesh! I was thinking of Twelve Oaks or Great Lakes Crossing for future locations, but both might be a little out of the way. If there is a big turnout from CCS eventually, perhaps the Wayne State campus might be good hunting grounds. I used to sketch there when I was a student.

I’ll look into the OCC drawing class, and I hope to see you sometime.

I was a bit late this time. Got distracted by a project and the time slipped away. I didn’t show up until 3:30. Probably nobody else came, but that’s my excuse in case I was missed.

Next week I think I’ll try the Great Lakes Crossing Mall food court. It’s a little less centrally located, but it should provide some excellent subjects.

#7

Hey Tom,

I cant see the last two images

#8

They show up for me. Are you using Sympatico DSL? I used to have some trouble with them when I was living in T.O. They have technical problems from time to time that prevents many sites, mine included, from getting through.

#9

New mall this time, with a kid’s play area.

#10

let me know when the next one is, and i’ll try my hardest to be there, I should be out of town this weekend.

Hey Tom,

I’m in Dearborn and be glad to join you.

KidMesh,

When is the ld session at OCC exactly?

Cheers.

#13

Hey, is this still going on?

I don’t usually come to these forums but I heard about this thread over at eatpoo. I’m in the southfield area and would come if this was still going on.

#14

Alright, I’m back in town, so just let me know where and when the next meeting is, and i’ll be there

Pootevic, Fides, Adrian: it’s still on, every week. I’ve been going to Great Lakes Crossing up in Auburn Hills, but I realize that is way out of the way for most people. What do you say Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi for next week? If this is agreeable then I will change the location at the top of the thread.

Here is the latest. I can definitely use the practice.

12 oaks is fine for me. Im on greenfield so thats not too far outof my way, definetly not for a good sketch group.

Hello Tom!

I’ve just spent the better part of the last half hour looking through your older sketches. You drew this one lady last week with her hair up in a bun – I could swear that woman lives down the street from me! Haha…

Seriously though, I’m so excited that you’ve managed to keep your sketch group going, regardless of the turnout. That’s professional discipline!

We all miss you up here, friend! Any chance you will come back to visit sometime?

Looking forward to seeing more of your work! It’s inspirational, as always!

Cheers,
Bobby.

Well, I know this is last minute, but I hope that people get the message if they plan to join me this week. Since there was not a concensus of opinion on Twelve Oaks and since, frankly, I haven’t been paying close attention to this thread over the past week, I think that it’s best to go to Great Lakes Crossing again this time. Sorry if my last post indicated that Twelve Oaks was a definite yes, but the best thing is to stick with the location that was last posted at the top of the thread.

Always remember to check the location and other details at the first post in this thread. I will edit that post if there are any changes.

Anyone who wants to receive last minute updates by email should make sure that they are subscribed to this thread and that instant email updates are activated. It might also be a good idea to permit other CGtalk members to contact you personally via email.

Here’s the latest. I also included a few head shots from CNN, since I spent so much time this week watching the hurricane coverage.

Thanks to Pootivic for showing up.

Thanks! It’s not hard to keep addin to a sketchbook, as you know, but perhaps it does take a bit of discipline to set aside a specific time. I’ve had to turn down invitation to go out with friends, “sorry, I’ve got the Sketch Group next Sunday”, even though I was the only one to show up.
