Yikes, that’s some pretty obscure hardware. Even SGI is moving away from IRIX / MIPS based systems to Linux / Intel.

Assuming the IRIX system is working correctly, all you should have to do is unpack the tarball and run it.

Run it from the command line console. If you’re missing a library it should tell you there. I ran Blender a couple times on an Onyx without a problem. But when I did have issues, it was with Ubuntu on a PC a few years back. If Blender doesn’t run at all, I’d check out what the console says.

Slightly off topic: I am not drawn to SGI hardware but I assume it is like my desire to pick up a TRS-80 Model 100 “laptop”. I always wanted one but could never possibly afford one when they were current (I was 10 I think). Is there any reason to actually run Blender on such old, slow hardware besides to do something you always wanted to do? I would think all aspects of Blender would run better on even reasonably modern PC hardware under Windows. But since I don’t know anything even close to everything I thought I would ask.

hahahaha. My first PC was a TRS-80. What a throwback. Um, but no, Blender needs OpenGL (and a graphics card) to run.

I understand how modern 3d graphics work. I meant is there any reason to run Blender on an SGI Octane. Besides for giggles, nostalgia or dream fulfillment.

#7

the reason was total stupidity–i was under the illusion that using a sgi octane blender would rock–i just did not do my homework–it cost me apx $800 of useless sgi equipment to find out–no one said and education was inexpensive

i just gave almost all my sgi stuff to a friend
