bigMuh's Diffusion with bumps?

#1

Anybody have any ideas on how to get bump maps working properly with the Diffusion shader?

It doesn’t really work to just put the bump on the Surface shader connected to the Diffusion, or the shader which has the Diffusion in its incandescent or ambient channel. That simply more or less creates a simple mix of the bumps with the flat Diffusion layer.
The flat parts will have a stronger Diffuse color (red in the case of skin), and the bumps will have less (making them look grey, and the whole effect is that of some kind of flesh-colored concrete).

Hi!

Is this what you´re after? With the bumps beeing slightly lighter than the rest?

It´s not a “perfect skin shader” but could maybe be tweaked into something useful.

I connected the bumptexture through a reverse -> set range (with max set to 0.1)
-> luminance -> Diffusion parameter of the Diffusion shader.
Then used a transparent Blinn for bump and a Phong E with high Roughness.
All connected to a mix8layer with Diffusion as base material and the others with Add as blendmode.

Here I have rendered them separatly as well.
The effect is a bit strong just to make it more visible.

Hm, into the Diffusion attribute, huh?.. smart… very nice closeup skin… let me try that…

wov that look realy nice. i’m trying to copy your shader network

#5

Yeah, interesting shaders Network !

I´ve upped the scene file for those who wish to study it.
It´s in the tutorial section of my site along with a short tutorial.

Thank you very much.

Any reason why you use a transparent bilnn insted of the bump combiner?

#8

Looks like he’s using the transparent Blinn to add some specular highlights.

#9

Thanks Pixero for putting it all together, looks like a very nice skin shader, at least great base to start play with.

#10

Yeah, see it as a starting point and keep contributing your findings for the ultimate skin shader…

#11

pixero nice work, intresting approach. So many diffrent techniques… i like this one. hmm

lol!

#12

For some reason i cant render that scene you uploaded - i have all of the plugins but nothing will render! (the render window just shows the last rendered image)

Any ideas?
Thanks

#13

Do you get any error messages ?

#14

I forget how you do it now, but you can use Francesca’s BumpCombiner to use bump maps with any mental ray shader…

Ill try and remember how you set it up when Ive got this render done…

tall the best,
Tom
