The Thief series have to be one of my favourits. Thief 2 is simply awesome conceptually, in terms of atmosphere, and in its plot (I was truly shocked when i found out what was happening). Those barely intelligent steam powered robotic sentinels (the Children of Karras) with the scratchy gramaphone voices are frightening. Being a huge fan of steam-punk and this is quite possibly the best rendition of it ever (I have some ideas for a steam-punkish world I’d like to illustrate but that’s another story) I love that series.
Have you played the first 2 linda? In appearance they’re a bit dated but are in many ways superior to the latest. Still I really enjoyed Thief 3. I was terribly disappointed with the end however. An anticlimax imho but the Shoalbridge Cradle level was very cool and very scary - It still gives me shivers…and Garrett is just cool…simple as that…
The thief series would would make a fantastic MMOG. I want to delve into that world - there is such a great wealth of back-story to be gleaned if you take the time…
However, my favourite game in terms of atmosphere, storyline, suspense, action, that sense of total immersion, as well as the look, feel, and design (not to mention the core concepts such as toying with the notions of forced transhumanism) - damn it, the whole thing is without doubt Half-life 2, no contest.
The final scenes in the citadel have to be some of the most beautiful, and awe-inspiring, and atmosperic ever to grace a game…if you haven’t played it, it is most recommended…
