Big Bad Wolfmans Sketch Book

Hi all,

I’m pretty new here and was going to wait until I had more recent work to post, but I’m thinking a relatively empty SB is good enough encouragement as any to practice more. I was going to include a whole bunch of studies that I’ve worked on over the last 5/6months, however, I felt by doing so I wouldnt be exactly true to myself.

I spent 2009 building up my foundations and made the effort to begin working on my own ideas at the beginning of this year (which has become my excuse for not practicing in other areas). If anyones interested you can check out some of last years studies here

There’s a TON of talented artists here whom I hope to seek advice from, help out others (if I can lol) and hopefully make new chums

For today…

2 more Bricher studies plus some quick value and colour plans for Aprils painting. I’m trying to think about the time of day to set my concept so I’ll probably do a few more of these perhaps tomorrow or the day after inbetween work.

So far so good BigBadWolfman!! Love how you study your subjects well, and how much you absorbed from the reference. Keep doing~ Will love to see more of your daily progress, keep it up :thumbsup:

ltken84- thank you for your comment mate. I had hoped to reply sooner, but I’ve been working the last 8days straight. Hope to post tomorrow what I’ve managed to get done during that time.

Times Square. New York.

2 weeks of trial and error with this idea. I really wasnt sure what I was trying to do with it in the beginning- create a digital painting or create a matte painting. I’ve went for the latter and hope to do as good a job with it in terms of realism as I possibly can.

Top image is my plate that I had to create from scratch for this idea. It took me yonks. 99.9% textures are from cg textures apart from a few that I found on the web. It’s still not fully finished yet with some corrections still to be made. I’ve been far too impatient and just want to start painting the thing lol

Bottom image is the story so far. Just bringing all my colours together. The sea reflection is only a temp solution same with the sky and the little fishing boat. I’ve just filled them in to help create what I’m looking for. It looks a little darker than it really is. I think this has to do with the resizing.

Hey Anthony, I like your work so far very nice feel to it. You have wonderful pencil rendering technique! The digital studies are quite good for 1 hour. One thing you might work on for those studies is trying to capture the textures from the originals.

Also, with this New York piece, you have a nice start and a good color palette. At this stage make sure your composition is reading the way you want and your focus areas are purposeful. From the black/white comp the vanishing point on the lower right seems to be a focal point of the piece, but then in the colored version it’s being covered…maybe that is just temporary? Anyway, good start I’m looking foward to seeing more from you!

Rabid1- Thank you for checking out my SB. Yeah, I agree on studying texture more. It is an area that I could tighten under my belt.

For my New York piece I’m trying to keep my centre of attention focused where the little boat is and surrounding buildings are. You’re right about the VP on the right. I am going to cover it as shown in the coloured version. Thank you for your input mate!!
