Best Way to Render ur 3DM

#1

Hey ,
I’m a Rhino semi-pro User and want to ask u guys what is the best way to render 3DMs ?

these are some avaible Ways that we can use :

1- Render with Flamingo (that I never love it)
2- Render with V-ray in Rhino (I used it so much , but the problem is materials … there are not many materials avaible for vray in rhino … i mean with .vismat )
3- Export 3ds and Import in MAx and then render with V-ray or Mental ray
4- the best way i think is importing 3DM directly to MAX with Powernurbs plugins installed in MAX u will be avaiable to do this . and it’s great …

Do u have any other suggestions ?!

I choose number 3… just because of UV tools in Max has more feature and control than Rhino. (I.e. unwrapping)
Not only that, but I feel much comfortable using Max’s material editor more than Rhino’s. However, I still use VfR but it will be a simple material.

Frankly, its quite easy to develop your own mat (.vismat) instead of looking around for one. Only if you surrender some days practicing them.

I voted the third way, but if you can swing buying nPower Rhino to Max, you don’t have to do 3ds. Save the 3ds format for things that need special UV mapping or that you want to FFD, etc. Otherwise, you may be able to get away with using the Brep objects quite often depending on your field of visualization. I guess you could say this is also the 4th way but I think a combined approach is the best way to do this.

Yes the 3rd way is the way to go, but with a extra step to it. Load your Rhino model into Moi3D and use it to export a clean mesh .obj file with and then import that .obj file into C4D or whatever your main 3d app is and UV it, texture it and render it from there. I work like that all the time and it’s much better and smoother method especially if you use Moi3D since it’s exporter is the best i’ve come across in a long time.

I really appreciate your attention guys .
as u say the best way is to combine … so best way is 3 …

any way we talk more about rhino-modeling in future … cuz I used to work with rhino 2 hours a day but these days i have exams … after these 2 weeks i can be active here and learn more things with my Rhinouser friends here

thanx

I’ll second that, convert from nurbs to pure quads from Moi then into Max.
Sometimes there are some tiny, tiny triangular artifacts, but if you collapse to poly they go away.
I think i am doing something wrong in the obj export from Moi but i don’t know what it is at the moment.
Vray all the way.

#7

I was told exporting .obj to Maya --> then Max be best way… artifacts free… Since Maya have Better NURB structure than max, would read NURB and convert it into poly better.

Moi sound interesting… But yet, I wonder how is it good since Moi is also NURB software?

#8

If you are importing into maya as an obj file then there is no nurbs info there to play with,
but its worth a try.

#9

I always export each part as an .step file and import with the npower plugin…

#10

Hi again ,
Ok my next question is :
I want to render with V-ray for Rhino , How should i give it a Background of Sky ?! I heard it’s better to put a Surface or piece of cylander and get Sky texture to it … but there should be a way to put HDRI on background …
When i do this in Rhino (i mean when i give HDRI to background) it turns Black when it renders ! i donnow why ?!

#11

@CLONEOPS: I don’t see why there is need to play with NURB in Maya, what I was told that Importing NURB in .obj format would generate less or no artifacts in Maya than Max. Maya handles imported NURBS or yet converted NURB better than Max.

@NIRVANA: About placing HDRI as background, I remember doing it once before but I forgot, It was long ago. I think you’d need to go into environment somewhere in Rhino Option… And place HDRI/Bitmap in the file slot. I could be wrong, again it was long time ago when I did this.

#12

What i meant is that if you convert a nurbs file to .obj it then contains no nurbs information
from that point on.

#13

Well not NURB exactly… but when converting .Obj from rhino… it still has nurb structure in Obj format which make it look like poly. Mays can recongize and automatically convert it in Poly better than Max which I was told.

#14

I never bother with obj format, as Direct Connect comes free with Maya. It imports steps just perfectly. if i need the extra realsim or I also use Maxwell Studio (not plugin)

#15

hey guys!

i just exported as .iges file and was able to get the model perfectly working on 3ds max…

But if i need to adjust the UV MAPS? What´s the best choice?

#16

Hi I’m not a rhino user but if you want manipulate efficiently and accurately uvw mapping in max, it’s really necessary to have at least a .3ds model. Nurbs even npower’s one are poor in terms of uvw manipulation.

give it a try and good luck

I have been using the new Beta of Accurender nXt and it is doing an excellent job.
Currently it is being tested under numerous platforms, unfortunately the Rhino one is not out yet but should be any day.
Right now, I export from Rhino as a .dwg and use the Autocad version of nXt.
