I have a problem when creating trousers for my 3d character, with the cloth modifier in max. Everytime I have created the trousers and simulated the animation, they keep falling down. I know the options are, to make them fit right or create a belt. I have tried and failed numerous times to get the ‘perfect fit’. So I am now faced with the problem of, how do I create a belt that will hold the pants up? I know it may sound stupid but I can’t seem to figure out how to do this. Do I create a belt and attach it to the model before I simulate the cloth or do I do it after and how? Can someone help me please?
Belt for pants
In Vertex sub-object mode, select the vertices in the pants around the waist. Create a group, then click “Surface” and click the body. This will attach the vertices to the body.
Thank you very much. I’ve just tried it and it solves my problem. You have been most helpful and with such a quick response. Thank you Franky Boy.
Hey this seems like a very handy thing to do…
Frankyboy, would you mind providing a bit more info on how to do it?
For instance, when you say “Create a group”, how is that exactly? A group of vertices? I didn’t know one could create a group of vertices. I tried it, but Group (from the Group menu) was not available for sub-objs.
The next one is: , …then click “Surface”, where would that be? Within the Vertex sub-obj panel?
Btw, I am using an Editable Poly.
Thanks in advance FB

This group of vertices, are what are going to stay in place when the rest moves i.e a belt.
I created a group of vertices within the cloth modifier sub object panel, called ‘group’. Selected the vertices and then selected ‘make group’.
I used it after I had used the ‘simulate local’ button and before I pressed the ‘simulate’ button for my cloth. I then selected ‘surface’ (in the cloth modifier’s properties) and selected what I wanted the vertices attached to. They will then stay there when you simulate your cloth, like a belt.
Thanks Inkorporate
No wonder I was confused, I thought all that was done at the sub-obj level of Editable Poly, not of Cloth
