Bell Uh-1 "Huey"

mrkrzysiek: I really want to see more too! Hope I will improve this texture…

jonathankrijgsman: to be hones, I have no idea:)

After watching some last Andre’s test renders of Mi-24 I decided to play a little with some ideas of one of final shot. Of course, this is not as spectacular as his, but take a look at this:)

Since I’m going to holiday to Crete, Greece, this is my last update in next 10 days!

Wow great to see some paint on this bird! Can’t wait to see the whole bird covered
How much weathering are you planning to put into the textures? I can image some nice beige sand/dust around the panels.

It’s a different heli but have a look at the weathering, just as an inspiration:

A long and hard way to the end… Check your link, coz I have got error.

Of course I’m planning to add some weathering. Right now I’m trying to find some good references about “level of destruction” of Hueys in Vietnam. I definitely want to add some bullet holes, not much, but there were a lot of Huyes that have been hitted during combat.

Ah dang, I uploaded the pic onto my server.
Looks pretty beaten up

The bullet hole idea sounds great, looking forward to it!

Man I love this Huey model…

Ah… my vacation from CG proved to be longer than I thought… But finally I made some small progress. As far I’m saying “enough” for the tail and I will move forward:) It is not perfect, but it is all I can do right now.

Textures seams to be more gray than green. It’s because of HDRi map… I will correct it later:)

Here I am with another small update. Well, it looks like small update, but for me it is quite huge:) I decided to leave photoshop and work with Mari. So I had to learn a lot, since it is my first time:P But all in all this is my new version of tail:

Nice! In somehow love the pale green panel with the little vents the most. There’s some nice quality to it. I would try to get a bit more photo material into the texture,at least for the edges of the panels. I would maybe desaturate the overall green towards the panel i mentioned.
How do you like Mari so far? Any great advantages you noticed beside handling large data fast?

This bird is going to be fantastic!

Cheers
Andre

Andre, I like this small panel too. I think it is nice to place few panels from different helicopters - I sure that most of Hueys in Vietnam had “multicolored” look:)

Regarding Mari - in simply words… I’m in love! Needed some time to learn basic stuff but all in all I’m impressed by Mari’s functionality. The biggest advantage for me as far is mapping. You do not have to make good unwrapping - you can make simple flatten mapping for all objects and it will be enough for Mari. For me - perfect! And I think, working with textures in 3d is faster than standard 2d technics. To be honest, I think that with your archives of “photo-textures” of Mi-24, Mari would be perfect solution with its projections:)

Ok, I made some updates. I decided to send this beauty in to the fire of real battle, so “she” got some scraches, dirt and oil spots. I added some rust too, but only on panels that are connected by screws - I think it is logical:)

A lot of work to do… need to have faith!

Drooool

Very nice detailing! This is going to be really awesome!
Yeah when those birds are really in combat service, all sort of parts get interchanged between the birds and some are just 10 years older, therefor the parts are far more worn out and have a different hue. I thought about Mari many many times but so far I was just too lazy to switch and adjusting the photo panels to the unwrapped one still goes well in PS for me. But I’ll give it a shot next week or so. For sure I’m going to use it to clone stamp seams away in the end.

Looking forward to the updates!!

Cheers
Andre

Wow that is some seriously nice texturing! Well done, and indeed MARI is a great program.

I’ve switched to it about 2 years back already and bought a personal license a year ago. Since Version 2.0 a lot of the functionality has improved and it finally has a proper “layer” system.

One big advantage I think over photoshop, a part painting on the model, is that a mask can actually be a folder full of greyscale images overlayed/multiplied. So you can build up your masks and still retain maximum editability. Great system.

You do need a much more powerful PC to run MARI with high res texture tiles do, especially a good graphics card with lots of memory.

Hello!!! Long time, since last post. I made small update! Finally:) Unfortunately, after watching Andre’s Mi-24, all my work looks like s**t!! Take a look at this:

I decided to delete all scratches from tail - I didn’t like them:) I think that it looks better without them. Hope to make this look much real in near future!

Some changes. Playing with brightnes of texture. To be honest, I’m not satisfied with my resaults, but I have no idea what to do to make it looks better…

Sometimes we have to go backwards to move forwards… I believe that this idea worked in this project:) I was not satisfied with textures so I decided to start again. I think this time it is much better.
