Beginners Question

Hello everyone, well i’m a web designer and i’ve recently been hung onto 3D Motion/Modelling and Matte Painting.

Why? After watching Avatar, the CGI was amazing

Well i was wondering, in Matte Paintings, people combine Maya/3D rendered stock with painting?

Because i’ve seen some really amazing landscape designs and they say it’s Matte Painted, does that mean the entire thing is painted via Photoshop/Tablet or only parts of it is?

Could someone clear it up

Sorry if this is a really ‘noob’ question but i’m still in the shallow end in regards to this field

Thanks!

Matte Painting covers a range of possibilities. They are typically created as an establishing shot or as a background.

The simplest matte painting can be just a shot extension where the ‘original plate’ is widened to include some additional sky and landscape.

A further level of complication can involve the addition of new buildings or the removal of modern buildings to achieve a historical effect.

Most complex of all is the type of matte painting which creates an imaginary environment from scratch. This can involve a mixture or rendered 3d, photos and digital painting.

Hope that helps. Also have a Google ;).

hi Michael, there are a lot of different techniques for MP, each artist develops a different way , even studios have their own pipeline, but we all use photoshop of course, and tablet is a must !, a 3D package and software for compositing , camera, so learn photography, you must learn traditional drawing skills, and some paint skills of course, get some gnomon workshop DVD’s they have maybe 8 or 10 matte painting courses that can teach you from sketching and concept to the a final production matte painting, play with it and always experiment, you will love this art

Ah thanks James,
Sometimes i look at works, and i’m just thinking, do they think of the entire concept or would the painters be working off photos they have and add buildings etc etc?

I’ve read a lot of articles lately and none really explain concept development. Do we take photos and work around that? Add 3D generated buildings to it, paint in detail for realism etc? Or do we literally sit there and raw up a scene and design it all from scratch?

Thanks

Sorry if these sound really beginner but i’ve always wanted to clear this confusion up
