Heya! I’ve been a member of cgtalk for a while now, I browse the forums frequently to check out all of the amazing work you folks put out. Thought I might share a bit of my stuff. It’s nothing special, but these are the “doodles” that i’m most pleased with.

I started drawing a couple years back when my sister bought me a how to draw mickey mouse book from disneyland when we were there on a family vacation. Never thought of it as more then a hobby. Then about a year and a half ago I stopped completely when I got myself hooked on World of Warcraft :frowning: I was finally able to quit playing it though two weeks ago and have found myself back into my drawing and I’m loving it!

I never really thought of drawing as more then a hobby, I always wanted to be a movie director, but now i’m seriously considering becoming a concept artist. I’m in my final year of high school right now and next August I will be starting at the Vancouver Film School.

I have no professional training other then my trusty “How to Draw Mickey Mouse” book and a couple threads i’ve gone through on these boards. Though I did download the Andrew Loomis books before they were sadly taken down, but I havn’t had a chance to go through them. I’m not sure if it would be right of me to use them now that they’ve been removed from the webpage.

Anyways, hope you enjoy! I read through your guidelines about how pictures can be no bigger then 800xwhatever but in case I missed something please dont hesitate to remove them and I will repost them later under the correct specifications. (and sorry for the horrible scans)

Here are a couple doodles I did in biology

Here are some gesture studies I did in biology. I tried to keep them around the 2 minute mark but i think they most likely took a bit longer because i was trying to be sneaky, as I’m sure my teacher wouldn’t have been thrilled had she known I was drawing in her class =(

One more gesture study. This was more of a 5 minute study. This old geezer is my dad :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll see if you can guess who these two beauties are…

Here’s my hand that I drew after reading the drawing on the right hand of the brain thread. I thought it sounded like a cool exercise. Still havn’t picked up the book though =(

Here is a character from the anime “Silent Mobius”. I’ve never read any of the comics myself, but I posted a thread about line quality the other day and Kanga suggested I draw some characters from this comic to practice so here is my first attempt.

And finally the character that started it all. My good pal Mickey.

These are all from the last couple of weeks since I quit warcrack. =D Hope you enjoy!

Rebecca, TM or anyone that’s good with ref: do you know where (on this forum?) I can find more classicist statues to work from? I really loved that one I did and I think I’m ready to get into anatomy a bit more. Sorry I have to ask, I’m just so clumsy with internet!:frowning:

#785

Maladie,

Here are 2 sites for you:
Web Galery of Arts (and here is a link to Michelangelo’s sculptures)
and Sculptura Italiana

In addition, searching for “sculpture” on flickr is likely to yield interesting results.

#786

Hey TA, this one’s for you;)! Thanks for all the help with ref, I really appreciate it.

And…I want a t-shirt stating ‘Michelangelo, I wanna have your baby’. What a great artist that guy is, I love his fluency. Funny I had all these subjects in school and never took an interest, I was more into contemporary artists. Now I really start to appreciate them though:).

This one took 10/15 min.

gooms9,

Welcome aboard. Nice to see your work! I think what you really might try doing to improve your work is to do Master Copies.

One person in particular who has done a lot of Master Copies is Erich Shreiner:

Anatomy Thread of Erich Schreiner
He has done a long series of Master Copies toward the end of his thread which I would recommend for anyone to check out.

You might considering purchasing a few Anatomy Books:

Anatomy Resources : BOOKS

And you are welcome to create your own Anatomy Thread:

Personal Anatomy & Sketchbook Threads
See this thread for information about creating a personal Anatomy Thread first:
FAQ: Can I Create My Own Anatomy Thread?
Links to all Personal Anatomy Threads can be found here:
Anatomy Threads of Individual Users

I encourage you to look at other peoples’ threads and to see what they’re up to.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Maladie,

ROFL, I’m glad to hear you’re rediscovering the Renaissance! That’s the great thing about classical art, it sort of never goes out of style.

Really enjoying these sketches of yours, and hope to see you continue with them.

Hi there, welcome aboard!

A-I-R,

Welcome back!

I think both of you (and any beginner) would benefit greatly from checking out this thread:

Hi there!!

I’ve been wandering around in the forum for quite some time, but this is my first post here!
I am amazed to see such great artists ready to help others with their knowledge and techniques, this is the best forum I have ever seen!
I’m looking forward to learn as much as I can from you all, I promise I won’t let you down as a student!
Rebecca, congratulations for your excellent work and patience with all us noobies you’re great!! I will start doing all those exercises to improve my art skills.
(Now let’s see if everything goes right posting images )

:thumbsup:All right!! :scream:
That one was done in traditional media.

I have always drawn with pencil/pen and paper, as long as I can remember. Now I’m struggling to learn how to do the same with a wacom, and also painting them as well (one of these days… :D)
This one is another example. Both of them without any reference.

And this one was done with a photo reference (for the horse), all in Painter.

And that’s it for today.

Keep up the good work!!!

Azabache,

Hi there, welcome aboard! Thanks for all your nice words, that means a great deal to me!

Wow, your drawing skills are quite strong, particularly in that first drawing of yours ~ nice work!

If you are wanting to transition into digital artwork, which I would encourage, you should definitely consider participating in the Open Figure Drawing Workshops:

All OFDWs are linked here:
Open Figure Drawing Workshops with Hong Ly and Rebecca Kimmel

The most current, ongoing Workshop is here (there are still 2 weeks left!):
Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Rembrandt Master Copy - with Rebeccak 016
You are free to use the Reference provided in OFDW 016 and to post your WIP here, to the Beginners’ Lounge ~ the choice is yours as to where you post.

And you should also consider creating your own Anatomy Thread here:

Personal Anatomy & Sketchbook Threads

See this thread first:
FAQ: Can I Create My Own Anatomy Thread?

I greatly encourage everyone to do Master Copies, and this thread has a lot of resources:

Looking forward to seeing your participation on the Forum!

hi, my first sketches
did some more, but they aren’t worth to get posted.
the time i needed for each one is beside the sketch.

#796

emcD,

Very nice to see these! I think your 10 minute sketch in particular came out very well. I’d like to see you do several more sheets like this! Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Well, I said I’d probably try another one. This is probably about an hour’s work. I focused on the face, even though the proportions are still a tad wrong - I was trying to mainly get a value study going on first, just doing the main blocking.

BTW, everyone is looking great. I see constant and steady improvement in everyone - and that’s good news, right? We’re all practicing, getting better as we go.

I think the only thing I took away from my drawing 101 was what my teacher said to me on the last day of class:

“I’d much rather have a student who had good concepts, since we can teach a person how to draw – it’s like just riding a bike or learning to swim. But ideas are the tough part.”

All I heard was that learning to draw was like riding a bike or learning to swim - it’s something we all /can/ do.

I try to remember that everyday

#798

Hi LM,

Good to see you working on the OFDW piece.

Regarding being able to teach drawing vs. teaching how to generate concepts / ideas ~ I think both can be taught. Illustration classes give assignments that force you to paint around the concepts ~ so idea generation and technical skill are both teachable skills, imo. Regarding drawing / painting, the best thing I ever heard from a teacher was that it was all about mileage. Actually, the person who said this was Bob Kato, who makes painting DVDs for Gnomon.

But here we’re focusing on drawing / painting.

One thing I would recommend is not using a square brush, but using a round soft or hard brush for painting. Square brushes are more difficult to blend, and always cut into the small detail areas too much / and obscure them.

Also I would recommend creating small swatches of a range of values ~ from pure white to pure black, with yellows / ochres / browns in between ~ use the HSV slider to pick these values ~ and then use only 3 or 4 swatches (which should include black and white) to create your painting. As you lay down increasingly more paint in varying opacities, you will be able to sample more subtle values directly from the canvas.

Looking forward to your progress on this!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#799

omg, how sad is that, I didn’t even notice that I was using an oblong brush. You know, the extreme ellipse oval kind?

Ooooops =D

Will change right away, and I was actually starting to do the swatch thing! But of course, not the right way… lol

I like these, they really are meditative. I needed that today hehe

Great work in here! I’m sorry, I’m a bit too tired for individual replies, I’ll try that next time:).

Guess who it is…hehe. Feels a bit like blasphemy to even try, but it was great fun and I’m still developing my sketching style which is benefitting immensely from copying good ‘lines’. Fifteen minutes with no eraser (hence the chaotic eye).
