Like most people, I am fascinated with 3D arts so I want to major in modeling and animation in college. Unfortunately, the area where I live, which is Philadelphia, doesnt have that much school choice. Even if there is this major at a university that I am enrolled now, it is expensive(4 grand a year D:), and the 3D program is only passable. I really wanted to change school, but like I said, where I live dont have much choice. Plus, I dont know anyone or have family members in the west coast. If you are in my shoe, how you you approach this ?
Have you consider online animation schools?
I graduated in Animation Mentor and I can highly recommend it, and also from what I saw around animschool looks great as well, especially as they have making characters program that covers modeling and rigging in addition to animation program. You can get more details on their web pages:
Both of them would be great choice for starting animation career.
As for you next step, after school, I would advice not to start aiming too high, like I will finish that and I’m going straight to Pixar, Disney or something That is possible if you got exceptional talent and dedication during school but more often you will need couple years of experinece after that before achieving quality they are looking for. There are a lot of smaller studios and it is not shame to start you career in any of those building not only animation skills but also industry experience as well.
Wish you all the best on your journey!

i agree wit mirkoj, the student work at AM is better, they specialise only in character animation.

hm modeling not really sure, don’t know any college out there that teach programme properly, only see alot of people using Z brush sculpting software today to do practise their modeling
Don’t forget iAnimate
Agreed that online schools seem to have the edge when it comes to animation training at the moment, modeling and animation are also very different disciplines. AnimSchool does have a character modeling track as well so that might be something to consider.

hm alot of the instructor at AM are actually full time animator from familiar company name like pixar, bluesky, dreamworks, ILM and even RnH, so they actually get suitable animation mentor to teach the student.
not sure about ianimate, but you are free to research about them
Modelling is quite different. Depends on what you want to do. If you want to do organic modelling, take sculpting classes at cheap college and take Zbrush class with Gnomon. Hard surface modelling I’m not sure how to start.
Right, and the instructors at iAnimate are all professional animators working primarily at Dreamworks and Disney while Animschool has a large number of Blue Sky animators as well as a few Pixar and Dreamworks animators.
All three of the big online schools have highly qualified instructors teaching for them.
