Becoming a better character/creature artist

#53

Like I said, looking better each time I go to this page. Are those eyes in the wings? If it is, really cool. Keep it up man!

#54

I think the upper part is too bright and contrasty. Also the eyes of the head and the head itself doesn’t seem to be the main focus now. Other than that, it looks good so far.

#55

I love all the small details

#56

Thanks Wind!

#57

Secondary detail pass of Xathanoc’s arms!

#58

woaw! quite a nice stuff you’ve done! Congratulations!

#59

Thanks Arisgate

#60

I respect this work alot more since I recently got hired to do the texturing for an independent game project. Not my specialty, but you have to accept any job you can get.

I’ve also been searching for fast ways texture, but I always go back to photoshop. I think it’s one of those things that just takes time. Anyway, I haven’t commented on this thread in a long time, but I’m always eager to see progress from this thread. Really detailed stuff like i said before, and I hope to see more from you

#61

Heeey, congrats man getting any job for video games is pretty tough.

Here’s the first draft of Xathanoc’s lowpoly arm.

That arm is ridiculously detailed. Saw your other sketchfab stuff. Really awesome work. Keep doing what you’re doing bro. T

#63

I like your style.

For me reminiscent of highly detailed 3D tattoo work via eastern schools, Tebori, being one such technique that springs to mind. Anyway fabulous work, I’m now so subscribed

#64

Thanks guys

I’m always worried about the details turning into a granulated mess from a distance, so I make sure to zoom out often, and adjust highlights, balancing them with shadows.

I’m working on the cloth now. There’s an ingenious method for making worn cloth here: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?177722-Torn-Cloth-Tutorial

however I think it’ll be overkill for this game character, although I’m sure it would prove immensely useful if I’m doing hyper-realistic game characters, or if I’m making a high quality zbrush sculpt for rendering. Although… I might still use it. Hm…

For now, I’ve decimated the shawl/cloak(?) trim so that zbrush doesn’t lag when I use the curve strap snap brush to make it look like stylized torn linen. I’ll see if I can finish the shoulders and upper torso section before I nod off.

I’ve also finally installed the etera UV scripts for modo, which is an absolute life-changer.

didn’t get it done tonight… kept adding stuff :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: first it’s Grassetti, now it’s this guy?! Q_Q https://www.artstation.com/artist/maratars https://www.artstation.com/artist/maratars
jelly meter over 9000/no wonder I’m still living with my dad/why would anyone hire me/ utter despair

there’s always going to be competition. It’s easy to just give in to their greatness and fade away, but don’t. Just keep doing what your doing and keep improving. You’ll get to their level in time, maybe even better.

#67

Zetheros, you’ve told me to don’t give up and always try to improve your skills, so keep it up:) You will be better than him if you will practice everyday. And look what have you done recently. It’s really on a pro level

#68

haha, I was just being silly

Actually, finding really incredible artwork is the main way I learn, I couldn't do without it. It keeps me motivated and shows me what I need to do to improve, so I'm always on the lookout for more.

#69

That’s good to know. It wouldn’t make sense to just call it quits and you’re doing such a great job with this piece

#70

Ulgh. I’ve been working on this sculpt for so long, it doesn’t even look that good to me anymore. Ah well, the upper body is ready for retopo. A few more adjustments afterwards + bake, and I’ll be able to move onto the wings, legs, tail… and then I’m done!

#71

An update on the retopology progress It’s all by hand (I gave up on the automatic retopo idea), so it’s been a few grueling days of tedium, but I’m nearly done. I also figured out how to do some simple rendering in modo!

#72

I’ve been learning substance painter + designer, and made a goblet! Also, I’m going to make a water well, too. Still working on the retopo of Xathanoc.
