Beast of Burden - Characters - Krugar

#1

I’m feeling guilty about entering since I have so much other stuff to work on.

But anyway, heres my concept sketch done in 3D since I have an allergy to paper.

This is actually three different sketches morphed into one.

<edit>
Added a beast (defined in part as a quadraped according to my dictionary)

hmmm… i love the compositions i can get with this setup

#3

When they said no humanoid i think they meant no fat people too;)

#4

It’s a cool concept, but you’re treading the humanoid rule pretty darned close. Bipedal is cool, but change the details of the character into more of a “beast”. I don’t think just making him flabby is going to change it enough.

#5

I like your design, but it’s way too humanoid IMO. Only birds, dinos, and people walk on two legs. I think the BoB right now is just too close to humanoid to work no matter what you did with it.

#6

Yeah, thanks guys. Just added a new image up top with a more beastly character.

I’m seeing alot of dinosaur based characters so i’m trying to avoid that by going with a convoy of screwed up characters - with the purpose of either being a pilgrimage, a seasonal migration or some sort of screwed up army.

I’m swinging towards the more primitive instinctual migration at the mo.

Update! Just blocking things out.

Give me your opinions.

What do you think of the pointy arms?
Do you like the proportions?
I was thinking of making it more like the Dali elephant.
Do you like the overall design?

#8

Very good design,
I’ll keep an eye on your thread.

#9

Pointy be good! Almost reminds me of those weird riding beasts in the Dark Crystal.
Funky blades as arms would be cool!:scream:

#10

I’ve been following this challenge closely and everything posted looks really good, but this thread just gave me goosebumps: fantasic design!

I can’t wait untill the next update!

nice daparture from the heavy shoulder-set.

That’s the first thing that has to go if you want to make yours stand out from the rest.

I totally dig the emaciated slave thing you got going.

only thing is he doesn’t seem like he’d be able to pull all that weight.
more specifically:
he seems to be putting his shoulders/weight into it. However his skinny frame would call (IMO) for him to be pulling himself along with his arms.
More like cliff-climbing (except horizontal).

did that make sense?

#12

ok, here’s a sketch to show what I mean.

Although this way would call for him to have hooks at the ends.

I just spent 5mins staring at Sherban’s avatar waiting for it to change. :surprised

THanks for the comments NGKrush, Erilaz, Cyroz2000, mucho appreciated it gives me some more motivation.

Sherban, thats a cool take on the design. Crazy… you put the weight at a higher point than i had planned… so he got evolved in a new direction.

I planned the beast around having the weight at the hips with the tow line at a similar angle to the spine. So he drives with his legs. The only problem is that he would have his COG so far forward, which is why i designed the pointy arms to support his body weight.

I dunno, does that design work? Maybe I’ll need to make the tow line at a flat angle.

I’m getting urges to build several characters so I think the hook-arm will be in my next design.

I’m never going to finish this

is that going to be “wolves pulling a sled forward” like ? that would look really cool and go with what sherban said about that the beast isn’t strong enough to carry the load
(sherban: “only thing is he doesn’t seem like he’d be able to pull all that weight.”)

I agree on the waight on it’s hips, it look more natural

I think if you want the legs to carry the weight - the one planted on the ground has to be firmer (ie. straight - like the green arrow in your image). and maybe reach further with the other leg.

I’m getting urges to build several characters so I think the hook-arm will be in my next design.

So this guy’s gonna be the big “elephant” with little hook-guys around him?

looking good
