Beast of burden - character - ZrO-1

#363

Well, I did some subtle tweaking to the smoothed version of the cowboy’s face. Next step is rigging the unclothed body. Once that is done I begin making the clothes. By the way do any of you know of any good Maya Cloth tutorials out there? I have been looking and haven’t found much.
Here’s the latest pic:

hey zro-1, nice work on the head, great looking mesh. On that angle it looks like the cheek bone is a bit too high or the underneath of it cuts away a little too far. But that might just be on that angle.
otherwise it’s sweet.

cheers

The only tutorial that is any good is the one in the help section. It’ll teach you some of its strengths. IMO you should just model the clothes on the character. If you still want to do MAYA Cloth, make the patterns as close to real clothing patterns as you can. the simpler the better. Ill dig out my notes from class and see if I can explain more for you later. Right now there is a BBQ I gotta get to. Go eat a former beast of Burden, if you know what I mean. :stuck_out_tongue:

@ dmcgrath: yeah I found the cloth tut in Maya help after I posted that. The help file will be all I need to do the clothes. Thanks for the help though I really appreciate it.
Here’s the latest, I modeled the glases again, but recycled the hat:

#367

The lips looka bit pursed up and pouty for a hardened bounty hunter at the moment.

The glasses seem to work well though! Rework is getting better and better!

#368

ure crasy man all that detail  stopp it what will u do next a complete city

#369

hrm, yeah, I’m not sure being brought in for bounty would be what I’d worry about if a guy with that expression came after me in chaps.

That aside, he’s lookiing lightyears better…some odds and ends but it leaves the old guy in the dust. Main thing right now I’d say is fix the brim of the hat, it’s 2-dimensional. Look forward to seeing the rest. Rock on.

Something one of my instructors told me:

Start testing and tuning your cloth in a seperate scene and then when you got it perfect, go into your original scene and copy over all the settings. It seems that messing with cloth leaves extra nodes or bit and pieces (i dont yet understand what exactly) all around and causes problems. I added some simple cloth to my entry and ive crashed probably 20 times since  good luck

@ 'cube: LMAO hahaha yeah all he needs is a black-leather biker’s cap and a goatee. LOL. No seriously though, I think the camera angle and no lighting is making the lips look more pouty than they really are. I was trying to have the bounty-hunter/cowboy look like a younger guy say in his early 20s (hence no wrinkles and fuller lips). obviously influenced by too much anime  Plus, I didn’t want to gat too cliche with his face.

@ crode: Thank you very much for that tip. I will most definetly watch out for that.

#372

He’s looking better and better Zr0. I think if you widened his jaw and mouth, added wrinkles around his eyes and mouth, and tweeked his nose a bit, you would get a much more serious looking dude. Also his eyebrows could use a bit more expression. I think the over all face is looking believable though. Nice work:beer:

#373

Oh heres another tip thats usefull: Instead selecting different cloth materials or tweaking the “cp default properties” go into the “cpsolver” and tweak the solver scale until it looks good on your character. Then change the cloth properties if you still need to.

#374

Thanks guys.
@ KinghtWhitie: You are totally right about those changes making him look more serious. However, I’m purpously keeping him ‘soft’ looking. I think it will be a cool contrast once I get him into the scene.

@ Crode: Thanks again for the tips. You’re pro’lly saving me 2 days worth of headaches :D.

Well, primary modeling is complete on the cowboy. I’ve modeled everything I need to before rigging. Now I’m going to bang out the skeleton. Hopefully the cleaner mesh on this model will ease some of my weighting woes. Once rigging is done and weighted, then I just need to stitch up some clothes and get him in the scene.
Here’s the primary modeling:

oh noooooooo !!! the cowboy is nude he is a stripteaser … he he he …really cool ,your rox dude:buttrock:

#376

Picture the scene…

“Howdy pardner… you new to these parts?”

“Yep”

“Whadda they call ya?”

“Buttocks, Buttocks the Kid…”

(The whole bar empties at the sound of his name…)

Mighty fine looking gunslinger you got there - but I dread to think where he keeps the things!

#377

I don’t know matter there it is of strange but I think that adding been losing stuff the initial beauty
:surprised

Hey, just been looking though your thread. One thing about maya clothe if you never used it before is your going to run into more trouble then help, but since its just a picture you will be using it for and you have a pretty good model there, you may not run into problems, all Ican say is that maya clothe has a mind of its own! and you want it to do one thing, and it ends up doing another! youll see what im talking about. Your best bet is to do a tutorial of it really fast to understand it, in the help menu. Then go from there… I hope this helps out any, great modeling skills throughut by the way, and hurry up with the clothes, this naked YMCA cowboy is starting to scare me, j/k! keep up the fine work!

I figured since the Cloth can be buggy I would model the under-garments traditionally. I’ll still do the chaps, bandana, and over-coat with the Cloth tool, but I did the t-shirt and pants regularly.
Here’s the pic (I know aboyt the seam on his butt, however it will be covered by the coat so I’m not going to mess with it):

#381

man that’s looking excellent, only one prob, the butt looks like my grandmothers, too saggy.

#382

lookin’ really good bro! only thing i would change is the wrist. i think that it needs more definition. at the moment the part where the arms turns into the hand looks to soft. so go on man!:buttrock:
