Beast of Burden - Character - the_hand

#1

Here’s my entry which I hope I will have the time to complete after my current freelance project ends. So far I have only got the time for some quick sketches. This is by no means the final design as I still have some concepts that I want to commit to paper.

Pardon the quality of the drawing, but this is the first time I’ve seriously sat down and drawn something on paper in more than two years. And my first attempted marker rendering since 1995!!! I don’t know which is more surprising, the fact that I still know how to use markers or that I was able to squeeze out the last few remaining drops of ink from my dusty markers.

C and C are always welcomed.

 ooh… nice concept… That saddle rocks… Can’t wait to see the 3D!

Heya!

I dont know what you’re talking about, i think that drawing rocks dude! I like the no arms/hands deal you got goin on.

A quick suggestion: The main body and head looks quite “busy” with the saddle, harness, etc. but the legs and tail are pretty plane… its looks good but balencing it out might help it that much more… maybe a lether strap crisscrossing down the tail, or some sort of shin guards on the legs… i dunno.

man, what a wicked design. I love the seat.

no other critique from me. I can’t wait to see more of this thing.

btw, what kind of markers and pens do you use? I like my prismacolors, but they dry out REALLY fast. I also need to find a good pen.

Thanks!

dosadi- you’ll have to wait a little while, my current project is scheduled to finish by 16th.

ravdog- I plan to add more accessories once I get started on the 3D model.

opiate- The markers I use is from Copic, a very good brand from Japan.

Virtuoso- Yes, I plan to have a rider, but only when I am finished with the creature. I hadn’t realised how much I had missed drawing until I started sketching last night, unfortunately my skills with markers and pencils had grown rusty over the last 2 years.

the hand is back once again  if you model this beast man… awesome concept, you still have you skillz

I hadn’t realised how much I had missed drawing until I started sketching last night

I’m so glad we made this a requirement  it flexes those drawing muscles

Hi guys, just like to submit the second concept that I have. A pen and pencil sketch that I’ve made after using up every last drop of ink in my markers on the last sketch.

The scanning quality is a little iffy and there’s a lot of compression, but hope you guys can make out the details. This concept is based on a mountain gorilla although bigger in size and strength.

Right now I am still undecide on which concept to develop further, would like to hear some of the opinions out there.

I like both sketches, both are really nice

but I think the first beast has a bit more “character”, like those creatures from star wars

i 'd loved to draw like this , very NICE !

to me the first one is quiet to dino-like, i prefer the last one cause it is bigger and it s have to carry better that to fight or race

if the modeling is as good as the drawing i ll have to change my eyes after the contest :]

:surprised

Very cool designs. They’re both great. Very cool face on the dino.

Conceptually the Gorrila idea is more original (IMO) than the dinosaur guy (I think there already are a few dino’s around).

However there’s this rule in animation where the silhouette has to convey the motion by itself. I think it applies here too.
At the moment the gorilla is very blocky. No forces or weight.

so, which one do I prefer, you ask… :surprised
well, at the moment the dino looks more complete. But I’d love it if you redesigned the gorilla. :stuck_out_tongue:

what, that’s not an answer either… :argh:

#15

The first one is a lot better for me, anyway it looks promising.

#16

Nice concepts!

If I had to choose between the first and the second, I choose the second.
He’s more compact and looks to me that he can pull some weight.
The first one is more like a runner to me.
Some sort of horse replace beast thingy.
Anyway, he looks too fast to me, to be a BoB.
The second one pleace.
