Beast of Burden - Character - Synergy

#1

I wanted to partake in the challenges for a while now, so here I go.

My concept is a giant dog-type creature. It uses it huge claws to grab hold of the ground while pulling and tugging at it’s heavy load. When standing on all 4s it will be taller than a human, a bit bigger than a horse. It has a very butch feel to it similar to a bull-dog. I already drew the concept, but I don’t have a scanner nearby. Will take a digital photo and post it tomorrow.

Anyway, I’m gonna start immediately.

OK my first 3D WIP of the dog-thing. I will cal him “SPARKY” for now.

Basic shape and proportions done. About an hours worth of work.

Please give me some C&C on this. I want to make something decent for a change.

Here goes:

And the second image:

OK Here is my Concept I drew yesterday. Will work further in the model today.

Please give me some C&C about my model.

#5

The body looks pretty good so far. I’m not too sure if I like the head/neck in the sketch though.

#6

Here is where I am now. I created the basic shape of the head and refined the feet a bit.

Please tell me what you think.

ZrO-1: I would like to know what you think would be a better idea for the head. I extended the neck a further and tilted the head up a bit. I will also move the ears forward when I get there.

#7

Here is the latest. I sort of created a nose, but I am having trouble with it. I refined the feet more, I think they look OK now.

I just need to add some muscle definition.

Anyway, heres the pic:

#8

OK. I did the bottom teeth and tongue. Refined the snout a bit more, probably doesn’t look like it, but anyway. I am having trouble with the eyes. Any help will be much apreciated.

#9

Nevermind. You fixed the head/neck in the model. It was the shortness of the neck and head angle. Both fixed though…

#10

Im glad, I thought the actual model looks better. My brother also said the model looks better.

Here is a new one, colored the nose, work ons some areas. Still sruggling with the eyes.

Please give some feedback.

#11

I don’t know man, I can’t really crit much. Right now everything looks pretty solid. I like the proportion, the surface looks smooth and even, and the head is coming along well. So far you seem to be on the right track.

#12

Here is the latest. I am quite pleased with the eyes. They were a real pain in the butt. But I think I succeeded. Anyway, If you think I can improve them somehow, please let me know what to do.

I think it looks more like a wolf than a dog as originally intended, but it took some cat turns as well. But its fictional so who cares anyway. I also created the upper teeth, very basic, will redo them later, just the old-man-empty-mouth-look didn’t do it for me.

Fixed ears, neck and mouth abnormalities.

Enough chit-chat, here’s the pic.

PS : ZrO-1, thanks for your replies, I’m glad there is at least 1 person that cares enough to not let me feel left out.

#13

I refined the nose more and added the seat. Needs more buckles and straps trinkets etc. Also need to create the equipment for pulling.

What do you guys (ZrO-1??) think??

#14

 no problemo Synergy. I have a crit for you
I think the eye brows need to be more rounded. They are a little too angular (IMO) right now.

#15

It has potential.
I think add more details on the legs. make some indication of muscles I think that would help alot. Unless your going for the cartoony look.

Keep pressing on This could turn out really well.

As I get more chances to look at this new ideas pop into my head. One thing that might be cool is to model the area where the neck meets the sholders as if the skin is thin there. In other words, the muscles have hightened definition there and especially the shoulder blades make lare ridges in the back. I think that would add a lot of interest to the piece.

#17

I think that sounds like a good idea, I will look into that and try it asap. Thanks.

I also tried to model some muscle definition on the legs, but I am having trouble with it. I am also struggling to get reference material, all dog and wolf shots I can find have too much hair on them, you can’t see any muscle definition, and I can’t hide the lack thereof on my model with fur, so I have to model something.

So anyone have any references, I will appreciate. I can’t search for images as our Security team running the proxy server nails you when you do.

#18

lookin’ good except for the teeth. they look too much like they were cloned. i guess it would be much better to scale and rotate them a bit different. and they could also be a little more…hmmmm…don’t know the word…damn.don’t get it…i’ll say sharp for now. another problem of your bob is that it is pretty symmetrical. i think it would become much better if you’ll fix that.
good luck so on!!

#19

Well I struggled with muscle definition on the front legs, so I just deleted them and recreated then, looks better now. This was the first time attempted muscles, what do you guys think??

I also deleted the entire head, teeth  and all. Recreated from scratch, it has a lot more character now, but doesn’t really look like a wolf anymore, some pig features as well. Better head or not??

Anyway, here’s the pic.

#20

OK. I worked on the ears a bit and created the teeth, I think they look much better now. Some miner adjustments to the face as well.

What do you guys think of the latest version of sparky??
