Beast of Burden - character - sandpiper

#12

Well, here’s the first attempt at the body…still very rough. Needs more musculature refinement…just a progress shot. I haven’t had much time to work on it, so I’m a bit behind. Please critique this thing…

looks awesome!! let me know when you model his reaper like claws. the body looks good–definitely needs some muscular definition----this is a beast of burden, he/she’s been working his/her entire miserable life so you know they gotta be ripped…not like that tub of goo you got going now!!! keep it up!:scream:

hiya. it seems that everything i have meen making is organic style lately so i suck at structures. So ill try and help you out with what i can.

In your sketch you have him in a sorta action pose. try to model him in his resting position so that you can rig him up nicely.

you could try modeling the head and appendages seperate and attach together later, but thats just a matter of personal preference

If those wringkes on his back are modeled, you might want to leave that to last.

I like your sketch much. Keep at it and it will turn out great :buttrock:

#15

good comments–do you know of a good tutorial on rigging per-se?

#16

Crode: Good suggestions! I was wondering whether or not I should model the head and arms separately. I’m not sure what his rested state would look like, plus I don’t have any rigging experience. I’m used to doing architectural modeling and wanted to practice this stuff for fun. If you know any tutorials for rigging, let me know. Any reason why I should model the wrinkles last? I’m guessing that I should wait for details last…thanks for the help!

Bigfatclown: Soon I will be modeling the arms and reapers, plus the head. Then I will start chiseling out the muscle detail. Good comments…:buttrock:

#17

i do have a rigging tutorial for Maya and maybe XSI but its just photocopies, ill see if i have anything in a file format for you. Thx for your comments on my thread. ill post something new tonight :buttrock:

#18

I’m working in max right now. Even if it’s just a website somewhere with those kinds of tutorials, that would be awesome! Do you think I could figure it out even if it’s for Maya or XSI?

Right now I am modeling the front arms and will post an update as soon as I can (I can’t work on it this weekend)…

#19

here’s an update, still rough of course, will hopefully get whole body done soon to add more detail…

#20

I don’t use max, and I didn’t read the tutorial, but here is what I found in 5 seconds

http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/bones%20tut/Bones%20tut.htm

and I’m sure there are 100000 more tutorials…if there are really much tutorials for a 3d program then it’s 3dmax, so this shouldn’t be a problem

#21

Ok i did a pretty extensive search and there are few tutorials that actually step you though the basics. Im not sure how easy this one is to follow but its at least has proper pictures. Its for max believe not sure which version. Try it out, you might find out a better way to rig yourself after you learn the basics

edit: I checked out that link the other guy posted seems pretty decent. start with that one

#22

Back from Siggraph and now have some changes that I can post. I started the head and I know it still definitely has some areas that need work and much more detail, but I needed to get a progress model up. Please comment on whatever…not sure if I will finish by deadline, but you never know…

#23

here’s the whole thing together, unattached of course

#24

aaaany comments out there??? Please help fellas! I can’t learn without input…anything, I’m dying here…

#25

Ok, here’s an update…pleeease comment…I know I probably won’t finish in time for the deadline, but any comments are good. Keep in mind that all the parts are still separate. I need to weld them together after I get the general body parts done. The hind leg reaper is just a place holder for now…I still have a lot of muscle detail to fix in the arms and legs and body. :applause:

#26

Hey sandpiper, you’re doing a great job. The modeling looks to be coming out very well. I don’t have any crits on your workmanship so far, I do however have a comment. But it’s more of a personal thing so don’t take it as anything more than a suggestion:
In your profile sketch the eyes looked like they would be forward-facing, but in the model they are more side-facing. I think the forward-facing eyes would add a sence of intelegence that your BoB seemed to have in the initial sketch.

Just my 2 cents

#27

Ah yes, good catch there. That would help it out immensely. I was wondering what it was about the head that was just “off”. I appreciate the effort to comment btw. It’s hard to get good critiques when there are so many entries to go through!

#28

i think it’s looking good–his hands and feet look like they’re wearing mittens or something…i would like to see the bone structure under the skin where the reapers grow out of…unless of course you wanted them to be like mittens…good job!
(bones, tendons, muscles: oh my!)

‘hello’:wip:

I agree with big fat clown. It looks like the claws as a whole just haven’t been developed yet. There is so much to consider when you start to model these things. I know I am dealing with the same thing. Also, I can’t wait to see what this beast’s burden will be. Keep us updated because I can’t wait to see it.!!:bounce:

Your beast is rocken…it looks great :drumrock:

#30

lil’ views of the head, worked on the eye area…mouth needs work as well as the top of the head stuff:wip:

#31

Here’s my final beast. Finished it a while back, but just forgot to post the final image. I ran out of time to officially enter the challenge. How sad eh?
