Beast of Burden - character - sandpiper

#1

This is my first stab at one of these challenges. Here’s the concept: It’s a rather docile creature who pulls some sort of load (maybe a plow or something–not sure yet) over a land that’s ground consistency is sort of soft and muddy. This will be my first official organic character to model, so go easy on me! C&C are certainly welcome. That’s my whole purpose for this challenge…not sure how far I can get by the deadline, but I’ll do my best!

Here’s the sketch…

#3

he should be climbing up this huge freaking mountain pulling like a tour guide and a bunch of tourists up mt. everest…that would be rocking!:xtreme:

#4

 I give it 2 enthusiastic thumbs up keep up the good work

Well a couple other guys are usin the whole spike to walk idea, and that one guy has one goin up a mountain, so i would have somethin a little more original than him goin up a mountain, but cool idea.

#6

Maybe you could let me know who’s challenge you are referring to with the spiked feet thing. I want to be sure that I didn’t copy too much. Your comment can also be said about the other entries with the elephant feet, bird feet, dinosaur feet, etc…I’ve seen less spiked feet than I have the other types of feet…I appreciate your comments though! Keep them comin…

rough detail of the reaper thing…

#9

one other guy using this pike to walk idea is korn_art. but nevertheless-your sketch is lookin’ cool though!

#10

so on with my mountain climbing idea…he could be public transportation for a city that’s difficult to reach by foot…like so:

#11

i would like to see a front view…!! maybe that would help you get your modeling off the ground, and then your beast will ascend the mountain against his will of course.

#12

Well, here’s the first attempt at the body…still very rough. Needs more musculature refinement…just a progress shot. I haven’t had much time to work on it, so I’m a bit behind. Please critique this thing…

#13

looks awesome!! let me know when you model his reaper like claws. the body looks good–definitely needs some muscular definition----this is a beast of burden, he/she’s been working his/her entire miserable life so you know they gotta be ripped…not like that tub of goo you got going now!!! keep it up!:scream:

hiya. it seems that everything i have meen making is organic style lately so i suck at structures. So ill try and help you out with what i can.

In your sketch you have him in a sorta action pose. try to model him in his resting position so that you can rig him up nicely.

you could try modeling the head and appendages seperate and attach together later, but thats just a matter of personal preference

If those wringkes on his back are modeled, you might want to leave that to last.

I like your sketch much. Keep at it and it will turn out great :buttrock:

#15

good comments–do you know of a good tutorial on rigging per-se?

#16

Crode: Good suggestions! I was wondering whether or not I should model the head and arms separately. I’m not sure what his rested state would look like, plus I don’t have any rigging experience. I’m used to doing architectural modeling and wanted to practice this stuff for fun. If you know any tutorials for rigging, let me know. Any reason why I should model the wrinkles last? I’m guessing that I should wait for details last…thanks for the help!

Bigfatclown: Soon I will be modeling the arms and reapers, plus the head. Then I will start chiseling out the muscle detail. Good comments…:buttrock:

i do have a rigging tutorial for Maya and maybe XSI but its just photocopies, ill see if i have anything in a file format for you. Thx for your comments on my thread. ill post something new tonight :buttrock:

I’m working in max right now. Even if it’s just a website somewhere with those kinds of tutorials, that would be awesome! Do you think I could figure it out even if it’s for Maya or XSI?

Right now I am modeling the front arms and will post an update as soon as I can (I can’t work on it this weekend)…

#19

here’s an update, still rough of course, will hopefully get whole body done soon to add more detail…

I don’t use max, and I didn’t read the tutorial, but here is what I found in 5 seconds

http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/bones%20tut/Bones%20tut.htm

and I’m sure there are 100000 more tutorials…if there are really much tutorials for a 3d program then it’s 3dmax, so this shouldn’t be a problem
