Beast of Burden - Character - Novacaine

#1

I really like the subject of this months challenge. So today I did some sketching and decided to submit an entry. It is a demonic beast charged with carrying a small military structure on it’s back. This was inspired by images of elephants carrying little castle towers on their backs. I want to go with an asian style for the building. I hope to have much of the beasts bones exposed with hanging pieces of flesh and muscle. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Wow amn, that is a GREAT concept piece. I like how well you’ve thought out everything. If you modeling is half as well planned and executed as your sketches you will have one amazing piece on your hands. great start.

I really like the first drawing…
and the bone sketches will definatly help you model him…some sketches of his muscle groups would be neat.

Looks like a really cool concept. Can’t wait to see it modelled.

#5

yup, really interesting idea… gogogo!! :applause:

Started modelling the head. I still have to add the eyes and refine much of the details but I’m happy with how it’s coming along so far. I think I’ll start one of the legs next. The four front legs should be similiar, saving me a bit of time.

#7

Worked on the head a little.

ooooh GREAT character idea!!!
That first sketh is bloody awesome - what a wicked character!! He looks like he’s going to eat the people he carries :stuck_out_tongue:
The model seems off to a good start too - good luck

Great idea for the concept!

On his horns though - make sure they do not come out so sharp with things go to a singularity they look VERY fake. Also make sure it’s not too smooth or too many different turns in direction- it’ll make them look soft and clothy instead of strong and boney

I’m having trouble with the horns. I still want them to twist but if I can’t get them to look better, I’ll go with a simpler look. I also got rid of the “sigularity” problem, which made me think that it might be cool to put ornamental metal tips on the horns like those put on elephants. So here is the latest…

The legs look funny to me now, but I just have to tweak them a bit and they should come around. Took out the eyes. They were to small and sucked, so I’ll have another go at them soon.

i really like the updated head, the way the nose has detail now and the horns flow into the skull, all very cool. the shoulders look like they need something, maybe a bit higher i dunno, but i think you will want to make the first set of shoulders bigger than the second…

the hoof and leg area seems to be a little on the thick side, but since you just added this im sure they arent finished yet…

Me too - much better! Keep going!

On the eyes just start with a sphere and build up the eyelids on top - paying attention to some sagging underneith (at least that’s my workflow - love to hear some others)

yeah ! this piece is gonna be great ! The main sketch is very powerful and the start of modeling the same ! i wish to see more !

I got some time to work on the legs. I really wanted the muscles to stand out, making the beast look really powerful. I’m psyched with how it’s starting to look. Next I plan to tackle legs 5 & 6 which will have different anatomy and musculature, like that of a horses rear legs. Thanks for all the cool feedback.

#15

Nice and strong model, i love the details, keep going man!
great work!

:applause:

Thnx for your post

#16

wonderful work!

#17

Added the back leg and eyes. Next I plan to bring out more muscle definition in the front parts of the legs. Tweak the eyelids, hoofs, and then add some hair. Then start making the little fort for his back. Lots of work. Thanks for the feedback so far.

its got a wonderfull feeling of mass in the head and neck area… but as you progress towards the rear it looks as though he “thins out” alittle. perhaps its just the perspective, but i would think he would look a little meatier back there.

i like the size of the eyes alot, much better than the earlier attempt.

well done … well played…

looking forward to the saddle and hut…

my beast of burden entry

First off let me just say that this is coming along really beutifully. I knd of aggree with chin about the beast’s back-side. To me it looks like you should swap the middle and back legs. Each set of legs looks good and they look like they belong on the beast, I would just switch them.

The eyes look much better now that they are scaled up a bit. Great work so far Novacaine. :applause:

Did some work on the legs as suggested by you guys. Thanks for the ideas. After rendering this out it looks like I still need to do a little more tweaking but it’s getting there. I put in the “burden” and I’m liking the scale of everything. I might just start detailing things out soon. Need to add hair, some bones and rotting flesh, spears, guys in the cart(these may just be dark shapes b/c of time). Thanks again for all the feedback so far.
