I like! I like! Is it marine, or is it land? (Might be hard to swim with those legs!)
Reminds me of a joke from the muppets:
-“What do you get if you cross an elephant with a rhinoserous?”
-“Eliphino!”
(If you don’t get it, say it out loud)
It’s a bad joke, but it’s funny because the muppets did it.
Eliphino…BWAHAHA, that’s great. Gotta love those muppets!
He will primarily be used around coastlines. I’m thinking of changing the feet to be a bit more aquatic. I just love the rhino/elephant like feet so much, just have to figure out a way to make them more marine like.
Thanks for the kind words guys!

Here’s a first start on the head. Done primarily in Wings3d, with a few touch ups in Lightwave. I’m still pretty new to SubD modeling, most of my experience being in Animation Master. I can see why so many people like modeling this way, lots of fun and very tactile.

Nice start with the modeling. About your concept. What about a shorter neck? So that the head connects to the belly. Now the quite heavy head sticks out in the air. Or maybe a just thicker neck will do it. I like.
brilliant sketch…love it! I have an idea to make him a bit more aquatic…maybe you can join the front and back legs with a thin sheet of semi translucent flesh…kinda like the webbing between a frogs toes…then he would deffinately be able to swim…and you could still keep those elephant/rhino feet…I think if you change the feet you will loose the elephant/rhino feel…way cool concept though…deffinately keepin an eye on this one!![]()
lol! This is a great idea for a BoB! And you call him a whino! lol Too funny! :applause:
The model is looking good. This is going to be a great piece!![]()
Wow, thanks to everybody for the great comments. Love the thought about adding some skin, but may change the idea a bit and have it go from one set of legs to the base of the other. Just not sure which way yet. I had a very large iguana that would swim by folding his front legs against his body and paddle and undulate his tail for propulsion. So I may try that and add the skin to the back legs. I need to try a few sketches first before I go one way or the other.
I have him roughed out and I think I have the proportions where I want them. Next I’m going to run through him and check my overall polygon layout, then it is off to adding detail. I’m doing all the modeling in Lightwave now. Since I want LW to be my main package, I have to stop being such a wimp and start learning it.
It’s definitely taking me longer then I had hoped to pick up the SubD modeling technique. I can’t get over how fantastic and fast some of the folks on this board are. Very inspiring!
Here’s what he looks like in the rough.

It’s kind of hard to tell from the last render, but it looks like his chest isn’t as thick as in the sketch. Especially where the back leg meets the body, the body doesn’t seem thick enough from top to bottom.
About swimming, remember that a whale’s tail is horizontal (rather than vertical like a fish) and it swims with an up+down motion. So you could just make the back legs act like a big whale tail when they are put together.
Looking forward to the details! :bounce:
Very cool. I’d like to see what the little bugger is hauling too.
Absolutly wonderful sketch…Care to share some of your techniques?
I just hope you will finish this piece anyway. Its such a great idea
it would be vary sad
to leave it unfinished.
