Beast Of Burden - Character - dmcgrath

#1

Here’s my idea, I drew this a while back and had to dig the sketchbook out to find it. He’s a snowbeast, used for many different operations on an otherwise inhospitable terrain. I will have to devise something that he can pull. A big sled or something. I am also thinking of entering the 2D section with this picture. I don’t know how I will do fur on this beastie (modeling), so I’ll just stick to a clean geometry base and all the little add-ons and trinkets, etc.
C&C appreciated.

Man I gotta tell ya that this is one busy challenge. I had to go through like 6 pages just to find where my post was. Heres the first update. I’m starting out very rough and should have the whole thing fleshed out in a couple of days. Gotta work faster and post more. Or I’ll get lost in this thing. Oh, yeah the red cirlce is a place where there is a junction of 7 different polys. I just highlited it to remind myself.

Ive only had time to draw lately, so here are a couple more pics, mainly of the hitch that is used to tow the boat contraption. I have been busy with school and havent had any time for new updates yet. Hope I can finish.

and…

The BoB’s look kinda cool. Are you going to be putting hair on them?
I like the idea of using two beasts instead of one. I don’t think there are any other 3D entries that do that.
So far so good. Keep it up

ya 2 beasts is a very cool idea. I seem to like these ones that hug the ground…running like a crocidile.hurry hard!!

to ZRo: Yes hopefully he’ll have fur on the final process. Of course it isnt really modeled so I cant count it. I just got a new plug in called Shave for MAYA. I really want to try that out. But I will probably stick with the regular fur plug in.
Ill give you a couple of quick updates here. Trying to maintain an all quad polygon geometry takes some time to do right. This little bit has taken me a few hours…

armdetails…

Hey, coming along…I like the idea of the low slung critters…looks like they have a lot to pull, too.

I’m still pretty good about maintaining quads too, partially because when LW first got realtime sub-d, you could ONLY use quads…now sometimes just gotta let go with a tri or two to keep things going…though tris are still considered ‘messy’ by purists.

btw, is that leg really that dense BEFORE sub-d? Jiminy christmas!

Only other thing I’d say is I like the more ram-like horn on the sketch vs. the lengthwise ridges on the rough…but that’s just as it is now, have to see more.

Keep rolling…

I spent alot of time on that horn, just messing and tweaking to see if I like it. That is a problem of mine (loss of focus sometimes). It looks a little like a star pattern on the x-section now, but twisted a little. here is a quick smooth out. But I will probably go back to the twisted lumpy ram’s horn.

#11

just a new horn design for now… I will post more product tomorrow

#12

its been a long time coming for updates, too busy doing homework, but heres a head shot

#13

and a little detail of the eye, just in case you asked for it

#14

I got on a roll and heres another postie

#15

Now that my schoolwork is done (Ill be posting that soon, it came out pretty good)

Some more work has been done in teh last couple of hours here.

#16

and a smoothed version, I dont think Ill have hair on him for a while yet. Time to start working on the rigging and the contraption.

#17

heres the other hard part, the harness

#18

another of the harness. with the towbar HURRY HURRY!!!

#19

how about a team of them!? My linkage is capable of attaching bar, to bar, to bar, to bar, etc…

heres a test render (it’s actually a cloud texture) sheep like
