Beast of Burden - Character/Contraption...

#1

Well, I’ve never done a challenge with CGTalk…

I have wanted to, but time is forever a factor. I am going to TRY and complete this one…

Here’s a couple of sketches/concepts… I wouldn’t mind if you guys/gals could let me know which one to go ahead with…

The idea is that a nomadic people follow the migration of the ‘Great Beast’ during each seasonal shift. They simply hitch a ride on the dominant male, and the rest of the herd falls in line behind them, each carrying more of our nomadic freinds.
The smaller image is a rough concept for a three legged beast of burden to carry our nomadic freinds…

Of the two beasts, which one to do you think I should build?

Update: July 6th – In the interests of fairness, I have removed the third design because of the ‘Not from before the start date’ rule. I did build it a couple of months ago, and while I do not actually have the model any more, I did’t want to get into any confilcts by potentially using an old design should it be chosen for me to rebuild… So, the balloon one is the design I will be working on…

I like the one with the ballon thing.

yah the one with the ballon are greeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaat …absolutly genius

i wana see it in 3d …yah .here we go

Nice stuff. OK here’s my 2 cents:
I don’t really like the 3-legged creature. I love  the one with the balloon. If you could incorporate the great looking cabin from the third pic into the wheeled part of the ballon pic I’d say you’d have a winner.

Thanks for the crits…

Gabe – genius!? hardly, but thanks…

ZrO-1 – good call… the cart is still in the design phase, I had planned on it being more involved back there anyways… there are two arms at the back of the cart that will hold a feed bag for the next beast in line, and so on… I’ll post an update as soon as I can…

I only have about 7 hours to work on this right now… and even those are stolen hours…

More crits, idea, keep ‘em comin’…

Ballon thing is a great idea!

Large lumbering thing needs at least 4 legs to be stable when walking, but more is always better…

Everyone seems to like the one attached to the balloon, so here’s a quick update on the body so far…

Here’s another quick update…

Looking great so far. I too like the balloon idea, very origional. The idea about the feeders is great too! Have you thought of an idea on how the dominant male feeds or does he just stop when hes hungry?

It would be cool if you had a contraption attached to the beast, like a pump, that was used to re-pump the balloon.

This is not intentionally crass, but you could use the gigantic beast’s methane to keep that balloon full. Sort of a double-resource of power. Just a suggestion.

On the other hand, you could all frown at me and shake your head.:shame:

Chad-D – Thanks… and yes I did think of the feed/lead beast thing… I think he’ll end up following a smaller beast and rider (horse sized) who’s only job is to pull a small feed bag to help steer the caravan… not sure yet… of course, I could dangle a carrot from a stick attached to the balloon… (j/K)

erilaz – A$$-Pump, hey? … I have a freind who is very technically minded and the first thing he asked me was “How does the balloon stay in the air.” It took a while, and we went through everything from a hot air balloon system, the a$$ gas system, and more… but eventually I think it’ll be kept up through a ‘hydrogen tree’ set-up…

I know, it sounds kinda like a cop-out, but once the beast is done, I’m gonna try and develop a bit of the environment to show some of those trees. There is a pod on each branch that has a spore inside. At germination time, the pod breaks off of the branch and drifts up into the air. When it finally comes down, the pod itself degrades quick enough to provide the spore with fertilizer… The nomads collect the pods before germination time, and wrap a bunch of them in a balloon skin, giving it lift.

That’s the loose concept…
