Beast of Burden - Character/contraption - Nikodemus

#3

hi again. update on the head… done with it for now… time to move to body… i am going to add things and tweak the head… but i need to move on first
btw… does modeling just take a long time? or are there certain techniques to speed up the process?
on with picture

#4

Modeling sure takes me a long time. Though some people can plow through a whole character in hours and its perfect. Im not one of those yet  Ive already spent many sleepless night working on this challenge. Coffee and cigarettes and a little bit of food and im set. LOL Like right this moment i can hear the crows outside welcoming the sunrise with their squacking noises.

I guess there are certain techniques but i think most of speed comes with practice. A good sketch as a template goes a long way into saving time ive found

ok crits: theres something a little strange about the nose with too much deep creace around the edge…? Or maybe its just the large nostrils. Im not sure how valid this is I need some sleep. Maybe someone else thats more awake can agree or disagree with me on this  rest looks like a great start

#5

good start! But the suface around the noise looks a little strange to me!

Check out my Beast of Burden

hi. thanks for the comments … i plan on working on the nose area more. i just felt it needed a rest so i could start the body. i havent added deatiles to the head yet either … ok i have the body started… heres the picture… comments are greatly appreciated so fire away …

i will be posting more tonight… i will have time to work… hopefully get the body completed so i can start the legs after that  so check back for more body completion tonight!

#7

hi again  time for update. ive gotten the body worked out no details etc yet but i have moved on to the legs. here are 3 new pictures … comments are greatly appreciated, im working slowly but im getting there. oh. if these pictures need to be bigger…different angles etc… let me know i can swap them out
here the pics, tell me what you think please

oh yeah … forgot to write that the leg is just shaped out… so if parts look goofy (ie the joint) … just ignore that right now thanks

#8

hi. i have another update  worked on the front legs… worked on tweaking spots a bit…
almost finished up … ready soon to finalize things and start detailing … :wip:
what do you guys think?

and another

#9

hi again. well im moving on to the harness, so you can see some more direction of where im headed  i still have a few things to finish on the beast but i will get there soon enough… im moving right along, … hope to see some comments sometime :wip:
anyway. on with the pics

#10

I like it!
I really like how it’s coming along.
The rib cage and facial character.
Look forward to seeing it “bear weight”.

#11

Hey Nicodemus. I’m really sorry I have missed this thread 'till now. You have some amazing modeling going on there man. I like the saggy, folded skin you’re making. It almost makes the beast look waterlogged or mushy or something. All the details you’ve done so far look awesome.
I just have one question: What’s up with the harness? Are you going to intersect the surfaces or something? It’s just I’ve never seen a harness aproached this way. I’d love to see the end result of it.
Great stuff so far, sorry I don’t have any constructive crits for you.

#12

hi there… this is just a mini update to say im still working but really busy and going to siggraph tomorrow… so anyway… this should tie you over till i get ack and start pumping out the updates and get a tremendous amount of mondeling done :wip:
ive started the harness…

#13

Awww… no fair! You get to go to Siggraph. I’d go, but I can’t afford the airfare or the accomodation. (Have you seen the Aussie dollar next to the US? Yikeys!)

Model is really coming along. Well done indeed! The head especially.
I go to sleep now…
:scream:

#14

:annoyed: I’m so jealous of you getting to go to Siggraph man.

#15

hi everyone… well im back from siggraph … must say i had a great time… and will be flying out to california where i dont know anyone… so meet me there wouldya
anyway… i worked a bit on my model … and this is my start of my modeling marathon … gotta get this model completed you know
so check back regularly starting tonight cause im gonna be posting updates/updates/ and my have some questions when it comes to rigging if i try that… i havent done that before… anyway heres a small progress… will be posting more like i said

oh yeah there are some small details in there but i will show close ups when i get more done… cheers

#16

hi just thought i may post a mini update before i proceed… ive started my wire system hard to see in these pics :stuck_out_tongue: will post better renders later … that will be connected to the harness and the contraption… i also did some on the primary harness strap

#17

hi me again… i dont have any new pics uploaded yet … but i will soon :wip: ive been working a ton on this challenge my first
and i have looked thru my books that came with max and did the arm IK setup… but i am all confused how to do a beast bone set up  i tried and stuff bent backwards and some didnt move at all… and i have no idea how to go about connecting the harness… anyone have any input or easy tuts? … im going back to modeling now… then a cheeseburger cookout … and modeling again… so stop by later tonight to see updates… thanks:)

#18

#20

I really like this one! Very interesting character

#21

Hey, I really like the final renders! I do wish you had put the same amount of detail into the cart as you did into the beast. The cart just looks like a cube. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice looking BoB!

#22

hey thanks levius and pearson!
this was my first entry which was a great experience… but it alittle difficult to manage the time… with all the other things i could/couldnt control in my life :stuck_out_tongue:
and aboooouut the cart  rofl… i ran out of time on that
originally i wanted to make this a swamp creature… which i did with the long grass and water logged, sogginess of the BoB… and i wanted him to be pulling a catapult that was stuck/sinking… but i ran out of time decided to focus on the BoB and Harness and put a makeshift catapult stone cart … but next challenge i will definately be up to speed and be able to finish !
thanks again guys!
