Hi, I just thought I’d get my thread started since I think I’ll be re-posting to it often. Crazy amount of entries started this time!! Well, I’ll go start sketching some ideas and scan and post tomorrow, good luck to everyone!!(even myself, since my modeling skills in Lightwave are still very amateur–should be a great learning experience!):hmm:
Beast of Burden - Character/contraption - 3DZukini
Sorry guys, I will have my sketches up today. I’ve actually been busy at work, never happens-imagine that…oh well, I really do want to get in on this challenge but I see already that I won’t be expected to take many votes away from you guys!!!
Here is my concept, tough as hell for me to model(new to Lightwave) but I guess that’s why it’s called a “Challenge”. I was going to put a scantilly clad woman on his back but that wouldn’t be a beast of “burden”–more like beast in heaven. Anyway, please throw up some crits and comments or something that I did that was horribly stupid with this idea, thanks–
P.S. I’m really hoping to hear from a lot of you, since it seems like there’s about twice as many entries this time!!
That’s pretty cool. I like that you have a cat as your BoB. There aren’t too many of those in this challenge. And who doesn’t like monkeys

Do any of you know if you can set a lightwave object file up so that you don’t have to re-load your viewport background images each time you open the file?
Espaki, I’m using lightwave 7.5(work) 6.5b(home) I started with a cube and went on from there–rendering with radiosity and shading noise reduction in LW 7.5…I think once the model gets more detail that there probably won’t be many more radiosity renderings–takes too long!
P.S. I think this challenge is going to be a lot more difficult than I expected!!

That’s awesome, I had completely forgot about the Panther from He-Man, maybe I should put He-Man on his back instead of a monkey…nah, I like the monkey, besides, I think it’s hard enough to model the cat’s head-I havn’t even come to the difficult parts yet!! Thank’s for the reply, please keep 'em coming…
Hey zukini, great head, nice smooth mesh.
My only crit would be the eyebrow ridge area, your concept pic has kool detail that really adds to the expression, if you can get that into the 3d mod it would add heaps.
Otherwise I love it, can’t wait to see the body,
keep up the good work.
Nice work there:thumbsup:
You maye want to sculpt in more muscle tone into the head.? Just a subtle bit. Remeber this challenge is for modeling so you cant hide stuff with textures. I once had to model a Lion and found a great book in our library called “Animal Anatomy for Artists” or words to that effect. Anyway have a wee peek as these sort of details, I think, are going to be what this challenge will come down to. Just a tought anyway:p
BTW if you were going to texture him…he wouldnt be that shiny would he.?:surprised

Thanks Chico. Yeah, I want to add more detailed muscles–I’m also fairly new to lightwave so i go through a lot of trial and error when try to add more geometry, usually I screw it up and go back to an earlier version. Oh, and yes it is too shiny, I’ve throwing these renders together just before I leave work and I usally try changing out some shader settings each time. I guess eventually I’ll end up with a good one. thanks again!
Hi 3DZukini,
For being new to Lightwave, your panther is coming along nicely! Glad to see you joined the challenge.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of it develop.
As for a crit, just this: Your sketch shows the monkey riding the back of the panther, but there’s no apparatus shown. I’d like to see some creative way that the monkey has subdued the panther into doing his will. Doesn’t have to be overly complex (see the sketch of my “Free Motion Limiter ™” in my BOB). But the stuff that you add beyond just the characters will make the scene that much more convincing.
Keep up the good work!
Did you ever get your background viewport question answered?
