Beast Of Burden - Character - Clockwork

Beast of Burden - Grynan

Thought I would get on the bandwagon and post my initial profile sketches. The detailed ones are coming soon. I tried to steer away from the dinosaurish looking ones, so I came up with a combination rat/bull/stork concept. It’s really rough right now.
It’s a bird like creature that wears a leather harness. He carries a stylized coach that contains an egg… This coach doubles as a perch for when he is not towing the “prize”

Stay tuned for the detailed ones…

I noticed there aren’t any other flying BOB’s out there, did I miss something? Does my lil creature follow suit in the guidlines? I know he per say “carries” something… I just want to make sure before I get too far into this concept…

#3

I think its a good idea, surprised more people arent doing it… I dont think theres anything wrong with it…

Finally decided to get off my buttocks and start modelling. I’ve never actually modeled a creature before, nor entered any challenges, so this is proving to be a personal challenge more than an online one (I’ve seen the stuff coming from you guys, and WOW!) I just hope to finish - It’s a big step moving from environment and fx to character modeling… Kinda fun. Anyways, this is what I have after a few hours of tinkering. Still tons of details missing. (Nostrils, eyes…lol!) They are in the hopper!

Good luck to anyone like me just trying to finish! And for those who have already made “Monster” steps forward, congrats, and you all are doing excellent work!:buttrock:

I like the concept, and the sketch looks pretty good. Only crit would be that the wings would need more surface area to generate enough lift to cary a large load.

The modeling on the head is coming along really well.

Thanks for the boost! Yeah after staring at my sketch, I realized the wings were a tad too small. I don’t want to make them too big because my little guy has to flap his wings twice as fast to maintain airspeed velocity (See Monty Python). I should have some more to post soon, Just doing the details on the head…

Yours is turning out fantastic, Awsome detail in your mesh. Lend me your talent just for 1 night!

cool clockwork! but he cannot open his mouth when you’ve modeled it like that, or should it be sealed? it looks so in the sketch but you never know

keep on working, you’ve started good and you’ve got alot of time left,
take care

Here’s some new work on the head, It’s tough trying to grab a spare 5 mins to work on this thing! Anyways, just added some horns, defined the jaw muscle a bit…

#9

good progress! I would however tro to integrate the mouth part with the face to get rid of that seam there, keep it up clockwork :wip:

#10

:applause: Nice and smooth! What ap are you using?

#11

Thanks for the input guys, Fellah, I totally agree - Currently the beak pieces aren’t attached, I’ve designed a simple skeletal structure to fit inside the head (and chest) for when I rig it to get more natural movement and subtle bone and muscle deformations, I’ll attach the beak last. I’ve broken a few cardinal rules of character creation tho - 1 always start out with a low polygon model, add the details and refine it later. I’ve started out high detail…lol (Oh well it’s my first full character) and secondly I’m using mixed techniques. The head and body are poly editing and the beak is surface tools…!? It’s a pain in the arse trying to incorporate the two!

The app is 3d Max 4.

I really loved the pterodactyls in Jurassic Park3 - this one reminds
me of one.
Looks cool and the sketch is nice.

Wish you good luck with your work and thx for your kind words
in my thread.

Great looking start, want to see more!!! more! ha, I saw your sketch, keep it up bud! one thing, make the wings big though to carry that massive bird like body and cage, and pay attention to small detail and you will have your masterpiece for the challenge. By the way tnx. for the post, keep the work coming.

If this is going to be your first total creature you are making. It goes the good way. I like the idea that the BoB can fly  (are you still the one which BoB fly)

The modeling goes the good way. Keep on going. And show some wireframes.
