Beast of Burden - Character - chin

this months subject has inspired me to submit something. here is the humble beginings of my beast. the model was done kinda free form, no real concept , just fired up max and started in on it…

rotation of model

he is still very rough but i have started detailing the head and neck area, the body needs refining, and the foot area has a long way to go as i am sure you have noticed.

comments and crits welcome

I like the overall proportions of the beast. I really like the head and neck position on the body. I know you said you didn’t really start with any concept but do you have one now that you’re working with?
I’ll crit more when you get some more stuff posted. it’s a little hard with just one image.

great start though, keep up the good work

the concept im working under is something like a cross between a bear and a rhino… i want to portray a sence of lumbering weight and strength…he will be straining against a cart that has fallen off a ledge and threatens to pull him over as well. the cart will have a harness but will also have rings embeded into the skin to act as anchors and to use as control points, like reigns or something…

thats the basic stuff

the image above ive added the feet… i want to give him some sort of toes, even though most animals like this are pretty much limited to having big cylinders as feet…

OK, cool concept. I think a bear and rhino will mix well together. I like what you did with the feet also. One crit I’d make is to try shortening and lowering the back legs and rump a little. Other than that everything else looks good to me so far.

I really like the head. The way the eye is set back, protected by what looks like bone all around it, looks really cool and believeable. I also like your solution for the foot. You might want to try raising the heal off the ground, making it look more like a dog or horse foot?

The back leg looks a bit mushy to me. But it also looks like you haven’t spent much time on it yet. I’m excited to see the stretched skin attached to the reins.

ive neglected my beast a bit this past week, been too busy really. i have tweaked around a little bit… added more definition in the legs, front and back, but other than that not much new, i am however sitting down tonight and spending some QT with this model…

here is the model in pose with stand in cart and terrain. once i decide on the pose i will model in the finner details and add the harness and cart.

just another thought on the pose…

both of those poses rock. i love the idea of having the cart and beast part way over the edge, about to possibly fall. That is a great idea, and you’ve posed the beast perfectly for that.
Great stuff.

Very very cool composition!!!

I preferd the first one, it’s more credible, and you can show better the cart.

Keep going man, looking forward for more cool updates!

Looking really good. I really like the first one. It has a great sense of weight and this feeling of impending doom, which might still be avoided if the beast is strong enough. I always love images that tell a story and yours does this very well.

I compliment you on laying out your image in a simple massing form first, instead of just rushing headlong into a final look. Very well played sir. A very “special” image. I guess I have to start thinking about my final composition also. Great work.

great poses…I definately need to work on that for my Bob…but you got alot of great ones to choose from…I personally love the one in the first pic at the …well all of the ones in the first pic…keep it up!

well even though i like the idea of the cart being completely over the edge it looks like im gonna do the pose where the cart is still somewhat on the ledge…
i do see why its a more attractive pose and as such i am gonna make a go of it.
thanx for the comments
