Battle stations?

#1

Hey guys, so my previous post was about getting a head start prior to my VFX diploma program, and now this one is about the ideal portable “Battle Station”

Im 95% sure im going to pick up a ASUS G751JY laptop for my schooling and homework.

Its a gaming laptop so it come jam packed with the power of a thousand dying suns, but will that be good for what i need it for?

stats as memory serves are:
2.4gh i7
24gigs ram
gtx 980m
1tb hdd with 256 SSD
FHD 1080p resolution.
HUGE exhaust ports and insane internal cooling.

thoughts?

(price tag is 2199.99can)

Your “humble brag” aside, yes, this will be adequate for you to learn/do 3D graphics.

Actually, it sounds like far more than you’ll need, probably for quite some time. Just don’t get into the bad habit of over-building everything or going crazy with refracted lights or anything or you’ll eat up all that power in no time. In all my years of work, I have always had to pay close attention to optimizations of lights, models, layers, fx, everything! You need to only build what you need for your specific purposes.

I’m old school, though, and can’t figure out how anyone can use Max or AE on a 15 or 17" screen. I’d recommend plugging one or more 24" or 27" monitors into it. But then I’d recommend a tower over a laptop any day of the week: easy to cool, tons of bays/space, fat graphics cards, etc.

Also, there’s a hardware forum on this site just for these discussions, which is where this thread should be. When I figure how to move it there, I will. And in the future, try to use more accurately descriptive thread titles so that people scanning the forums know what’s in your thread without having to open, and so the subject’s title can be searched using the search function.

im not bragging! lol im not getting this for free! its money i rather spend on other things…like…beer and POGS.

As always, artbot thank you for the quick quality reply!

i dont plan on going to crazy (on purpose) with my projects but i will deffinetly be keeping my own on the system temps.

my main reason for asking is my concern in the difference between “workstation” computers and GFX cards versus all out gaming cards. I remember hearing people arguing that gaming cards will not handle workstation style processes.

of course these arguments where a few years ago and im assuming they can keep up now.

sorry for the miss placed thread! :banghead:

AS FOR:

[QUOTE] I’m old school, though, and can’t figure out how anyone can use Max or AE on a 15 or 17" screen. [\QUOTE]
the answer is simple really, i have very small eyes, infact i only stand 3 foot 5 feel tall…

jokes aside as soon as i recover financially from this purchase ill be getting a nice big 27" monitor.

The only reason im going laptop instead of building a new desktop is because of school and homework while im at work…
