Baking Shadows

Ive been trying to bake some shadows as texture maps. Everytime i do though i get god awful results where colours are horrible and the shadows are very pixelated. I am using Physical sun and sky to light and setting the mentalray bake maps to 4k and Ive got a decent UV layout.

Any help or tutorials or setups people have used that could help?

Also does the quality depend on render settings, or the complexity of the geom (aka subdiv level). Any light people can shed would be great. Hah, shed, light. Cheers

what renderer are you baking with ?

Ive always been curious. It is posible to say out the raytraced shadow data into point clouds like Renderman? I know it possible for final gather pretty easily, but would love to bake my occlusion and shadow data the same way instead of rendering them per frame.
