B-Movie Entry: Steve Bateman

#21

Thanks Soapy. I use mainly OS software these days. blender, Luxrender, MyPaint, Gimp etc on 64bit Ubuntu. I also have zbrush and silo on a windows drive.
It took a while to transition, but i couldn’t be happier for what i do.
I don’t think the monster will stay as is, i just need to find some time to concept things out properly.
Where do you hang out these days?

#22

Ah, cool H. Luxrender looks really interesting. How hard is it to get up to speed on it? I may have to try it out.

As for hanging out, mostly I have just been staying away from the forums lately. I gave up on Renderosity, I got sick of all the poser underwear ads and also the constant stream of new poser users into the cinema forum. Since this contest started I have been spending a bit of time lurking on the Pixologic site trying to get up to speed on Zbrush.

Soapy

Lux can be as complicated or as simple as you like, i mainly use it for model presentations.

Zbrush is awesome and has a great community behind it. I also think it will be my software of choice for the near future. It’s the only thing that excites the traditional artist in me. These days i’m feeling the need to simplify things.

#24

Lol, Coooool love the composition and the colours. Fungi is looking awesome!

#25

I agree about zbrush but am still struggling to get a good handle on it. It will take me a little time to become familiar with where all the commands are etc.

It looks like Zbrush is fast becoming a universally used piece of auxiliary software regardless of what base 3d package is used. I am still running cinema 4d and the z-go script thing makes transferring models and maps a snap.

#26

Starte to work on the modeling, i’ll create a lot of these fungi things in patches and stich them together at the end to create the character.

#27

Really nice work on the fungus, Steve. I can almost smell the rainforest from here. I was interested to read about your new choices of software too. Clearly it is working for you.

#28

Paperboy Thanks, its only a rough sketch for the monster, the final one will be more realistic, half human, half fungi.

Soapy I too am struggling with zbrush, the problem is when you leave it for a while you forget everything you’ve learned, kind of a neverending spiral. I’m already back in blender for this challenge Lol.

Markdavid Thanks Mark, just a test atm, with rough texures, the final with have small hairs and slime in the middle.

#29

Have to agree with the rest here - the fungus looks really nice, supersoft. Some slimeyness will make it even better.
I have the same experience with ZBrush as you - I’ve started to learn it plenty of times and for each time I have to start all over. It’s really fun though, but perhaps not yet my choice for when things are rushy.

#30

Well this challenge is leading me into a different direction, both in software choice and style.
I’m now thinking of a micro world. heres an attempt at moss done with blender hair and zbrush 2.5 painting.
This is a first attempt, i’m sure things will improve as i explore.

#31

Wow! That is a great mossy effect. Nice work

#32

I really like that moss effect you’ve achieved.

#33

Hey Steve,

Fantastic work!! Love that “FungiMonster”, really great character. The green colors on the image put a cool touch to the mood. Great work and waiting for more updates! Cheers!!

#34

Here’s a look at one of the moss tools i’m going to use. All created in zbrush

#35

Gunilla Thanks for looking in, looks like we share the same memory loss, Lol. I’m determined to stick with zbrush now, for this image at least.

mdavid Thanks Mark, glad you like my doodles.

miketche Thanks Mike it’s a composite you see there, i’m now working on a more 3d aproach, will still use 2.5D for the final though.

Ferx Thanks buddy, sadly Fungi monster is no more for this challenge in that form, but rest assured he will evolve.

#36

Started on a different type of moss. Thanks for looking

#37

That look really good - all ZBrush?
How did you make it? One straw as tool and then drop each one to the canvas?
I’ve never thought of using ZB like this - for mass structures, very cool.

#38

Gunilla Thanks, yeh its all zbrush. I started from a z-sphere model, made five sub-tools from it and re-shaped each one. Next i combined them made more sub-tools of the combined mesh, rinse and repeat untill i had a whole bunch of them. Nothing is dropped to canvas at this stage, just one big ztool.

#39

Here’s how it looks in 2.5D

#40

Looks great - and thanks for the how-to, very inspiring. There are such a lot of ways to use this program besides modeling for the usual 3dapp. I did a first rendering in it today, can’t understand why I haven’t done that before:shrug:
