B-Movie Entry: Paul McDonnell

Wow. I like it already. The layout on the concept poster is a wonderful start. It really speaks of a movie and the imagery carries a promise of swashbuckling action that is going to be totally unbelievable and fun. Great start!

Thanks for comment browndljr. Swashbuckling adventure is exactly what I was going for!

Here is my WIP of ‘Conrad’s’ faithful steed. It still needs a lot of work! I think it’s a little too cartoony at the moment. I plan on spending more time on Conrad himself tomorrow. I am hoping to get some teeth in him so he can dazzle you all with his charm!

I just thought i would play around a bit in photoshop with a few of my unfinished stills. It looks a little too much like a 40’s war propogada poster but i was just wasting a bit of time before going back into z-brush! This will look nothing like the final.

I was playing a bit with colours here. I’ starting to sweat a little! time is tight.

And to all the ladies out there, no you can’t have his number. He’s married… to his job. Which is shooting down Aliens. You don’t need women when your an alien killer.

Hi guys. I promised myself not to burn my time in photoshop any more so I’m back to modelling!

I think I have finished Conrad’s face so I will concentrate on getting the helmet finished next.

I was losing sleep over learning a new program to render my final image out of. But I stumbled across this tutorial that I found really helpful so I thought I would share it.

It’s real handy! Any feed back is more than welcome, positive or negative!*

*if it’s negative please also include your full address and working hours.

Swoon. This looking very promising. Really looking foward to seeing the airman jacket. Definitely worth pushing hard for the finishing line - the survival of all humankind rests on the Space Aces shoulders! God speed!

#18

I have been working a bit on the layout. My main character is all but done modelling wise. I still need to finish the plane and I haven’t even started the 3D text. Doubt about me finishing is creeping in!

#19

Keep going man! What other daring Gentleman is available to vanquish the aliens? None I dare say.

#20

Gosh-darnit, you are absolutely right Mr.Brown! That was irresponsible of me to even think about quitting. Without Conrad patrolling our skies we would all be talking Martian!

On a side note, if there are any alien lovers out there, look away now. There were no ejector seats in the 40’s.

#21

This looks really good, I love the burning UFO, especially the sense of small scale. And I think Conrad is one of the coolest heroes in this challenge.

#22

Dang - real sense of gravity here man! Not sure about the colour you have chosen for the saucer though. Seems a bit dull - I would have gone for a gold/bronze/silver and higher on the specular levels/contrast. The charred look is spot on though.

#23

Hi guys, thanks for kind words! Your work is really strong too Ralph. I love your robot.

Uzo… I have nothing to say to you. Just kidding! your right. I need to play around with the compositing.

With out further ado, here’s conrad!

Software: ZBrush

In a world where flying saucers fly around as if they own the place, there is only one man that can stand up to them. And that man just happens to have a ridiculously large moustache.

A rip roaring adventure epic that will have you glued to your seat despite the fact that it’s 4 and a half hours long.

#25

Congratulations on finishing. Conrad’s great as always (of course). I also like your poster design!

#26

LoL Nice story idea, better poster concept:thumbsup:
Good luck man!!

#27

man, this looks great, I really like how you perfectly translated your 2D sketch into 3D… I’d love to see a full length movie starred by Conrad! the only thing that I may be missing is some visible gunfire going flying fro the plane towards the ufo…
good job!!

#28

Nice one Paul… good job man… I like the final Image… I would have liked to see the whole guy he seems like a pretty cool and charismatic character… Maybe you can do his whole body on your on time? But anyways great finish Congratulations!

#29

Cool and original concept. Like a lot the character design and the dusk mood on the image. Good luck and cheers!!

Ralph- Thanks very much for the comments through out, man! Much appreciated. Hopefully we’ll meet again in the next challenge.

Octavio- Same to you. Thanks for visiting my post, you’ve got an awesome style.

Fernando G- Yea, your totally right. As soon as you mentioned it, I realised I missed a trick. I also should have had some bullet holes in the UFO too. I’m hoping the next challenge will be titled “Planes shooting down UFO’s”. That way I can keep working on it.

Francisco- Thanks for your support through out the challenge. I was totally going to rip off your coloring style but work got in the way and I ran out of time. Yea, you have a good point about finishing off the rest of Conrad. However to tell you the truth, I don’t like the way he looks at me. :surprised It makes me feel uncomfortable so I don’t think I’ll spend anymore time on him for a little while at least.

Fernando P- Gracias mi amigo! I enjoyed following your posts.

I’ve had a great time with these forum’s and it’s especially nice doing work that isn’t amended to death by clients. I’m looking forward to the next challenge.
