B-Movie Entry: Patrick Schemat

#61

during the last days, many people told me that the last work hadn’t much of a b-movie, so i stopped working on it.
today i warmed up photoshop and started painting something and that’s it:

a bog where undead murderers, betrayers, drug dealers, cannibals and so on dwell, waiting for those come there to give them an evil welcome.
a bog of the rotten scum.
they will wear weapons and feast on pieces of other humans.

and there will be unnecessary much blood and torn flesh in the image to capture the mood of a really bad gore-b-movie.

#62

The new idea looks cool!! Nice depth and colour to the peice!!

#63

Big green creatures are simply charming

#64

paperboy and lamorra, thank you.

today i will submit the first wip. there will be a weapon in the hand of the front undead and his head will be turned a bit sidewards for a more “dead” looking.
more to the background, i’m thinking of adding more undeads.

#65

first wip, working on the mob.
added a weapon and an eye for the undead in the front and played with the colours to get away from the huge amount of green. also darkened the image a bit.
theres now a female undead to the left.

my next step will be thinking of how to make the undead appear much more evil and nefarious to let them look like they are the gatekeepers to an earthly hell.

#66

Now those are some zombies! I really like the characters and the great atmosphere you’ve created.

#67

next wip:
worked on the environment, the lightning above is only a test. the sky will be a challenge for itself, because it will be mostly covered by the lettering, but is an important lightsource for the undeads.

some dead small trees added and a bit more details to the undeads like blood and wounds.
also varied with the colors a tiny bit, hope you like it. :>

undead greetz,
bran

Love the update! The atmosphere is great. The guys in the far background blend in too much with the environment though, I liked it in the earlier update when they stood out a bit. Just a tad.

#69

you’ve got a great sense of color and lighting. great compositions all, but ‘scum’ is my favorite.

#70

i’m sorry for answering late, but the last days were stressful for me. thanks for the feedback, guys!

additionally, i have to work for the next weeks on another computer.

the bad news - the backup i’ve created from the mac where i had my files from the challenge can’t be read, groar :argh:. corrupt files.

because the challenge ends in 18 (?) days, i have to come up with a new concept. :banghead:

damn. so today i hope i will post first images - i have to hurry.

Hey Bran!

Wow, Its definitely been interesting following your ideas!.. They’ve really been across the board, but I must say, your latest one really feels like it hits the mark!
I love the title! I’m really diggin the enclosure and composition! And best of all, It definitely holds up to the B-Movie poster feel!
Also, the “zombies” are hilarious, especially love the guy to the left aimlessly gnawing on a human leg
Your lighting idea, as it is more of lighting since it will be covered by the title, gives great eerieness to the zombies, and works well for me!

Can’t wait to see if this is your final idea, and how you finish it out!

Cheers mate!

#72

hey bergquist,
thank you for your comment.
currently we’re trying to recover my challenge-files, so there is hope to me. :wip:

#73

Oh My!! I feel blind, I didn’t even see your last post…

I am crossing my fingers for you buddy!
Hope everything turns out ok!

I kinna know how you feel though, my wacom tablet died on me a little over a week ago, and I haven’t been able to work at all…
I’m hoping I can make it by the deadline as well

#74

that would be my personal apocalypse if that happened to me!
hope you’ll get a new one or an alternative in time!

and thanks for your support, it’s good to know there’s someone crossing the thumbs.

#75

Bran your entry looks very good. Its definitely looks like b-movie and I love how the green tone working. Keep it up.

#76

thank you for your feedbacks!

finally i’m glad that some files could be recovered.

because most of the time i’ve spend setting up the new computer, i did some minor detailing as shown in the chosen cutout.
i hope the highlights of the undeads don’t let them look as if they were made of metal.
i added some subtle shapes in the background and changed one of the hung to a “fresher” (argh! ._.) corpse instead of letting it a skeleton.

the next step will be working on the swamp water, some bog grass and the trees.
and… what about some arms and legs in the shallow water?

#77

only few time to work on it, hope i can finish it in time!

first steps on the vegetation, some highlighting on the undead (hope you noticed the spot in the eye of the front undead  )and added a bit more blood.

don’t know if the image is too bright to get a good atmosphere, what do you think?

undead greetings,
bran

This is looking really nice - glad you were able to recover some files! (I lost one file during this challenge and so I ended up taking the JPG it’s saved of it to post here, blowing it up, and painting over it!)

I don’t think you need to go any darker: Mood-wise, it’s really clear that this is a night-time scene and overall what the tone of the movie is. I do like your idea of adding body parts to the water, and maybe a hint of red down there in spots too…?

A couple things seem a little odd to me: Of the 2 secondary characters - the one gnawing on the leg and the other with the axe - both seem about the same distance back from the camera… but one is in the muck up to his upper ankles and the other is almost up to his knees. Maybe too late to fix, and it may not even matter - no one said the swamp floor had to be even - it just caught my eye.

Second silly nitpick: It seems funny how the source of the lightning, where it hits the clouds, is obscured by a tree branch. Valid, just seems like something you’d show clearly, dunno why.

But overall, aside from my picky comments, this is looking terrific! Very appropriate to the theme. Nice work!

#79

hi walrus,
thank you for your kind comment.

concerning the characters: yes, you’re right. i think it would be better to put the huge axe-guy more to the background by desaturating him a bit.

body parts: yay, blood spots on the water surface and some hands out of the water! i hope i will find some good spots in the swamp water for them.

lightning: i’m glad you told it to me! in the next wip, i will remove some foliage  by looking at it now as it is, it indeed seems to come out of the tree.

Patrick,
I can’t tell you how much I like this piece. It really captures that late 60s/70s horror movie poster vibe, or Eriee/Creepy mag stuff. To build on something Michael (the Walrus) said. . .I think if you loose some of the greens on the dead center tree in the way back distance, and pull down some of the darker blues and grays from the sky it will really help create a V shape and guide the viewer atttention even more to the zombies. Hope that helps. Either way it is very cool. I especailly likethe mix of warm greens yellows against the cool blues grays-you don’t see many warms in the night pieces-but yours pulls it off nicely and it is that monster creepy swamp yellow green that is so “cool” ha ha play on words.
