the road indeed leads into the nothing, perhaps i should paint in a little science colony near the horizon.

i forgot to tell that the last wip is mirrored; it should be flipped. :slight_smile:

the fight in the foreground and the greater alien with the torn off head are two different scenes; i don’t know how to separate them more without destrying the image as a whole. :frowning:

now on to the next idea:
within the next hour i’ll post some character concept informations and later some doodles.

ok, here we go! first character concepts:


Characters:

Yunuxx Emereon
Ok, this is my secret weapon: my first character design i did some years years ago.
It developed throughout the last three years to a person that got an amount of details i never thought of.

This is a boy, living as a girl. There would be too much text, so i am trying to give the most important informations to keep it brief.
Yunuxx emereon is an 16 years old orphan who lives with his (sometimes evil) seaturtle umikiui (means kiwi-fruit of the ocean) in the house of his passed-away parents that had left him wealthyness. He has many admirers, males (who don’t know that he is a boy) and many female (some who know about his secret!)
He has strange minds and is somehow stupid, but was blessed with a heart big as a mountain. He wears exotic dresses and is the worst singer you can mind. He has no fighting skills like superheros, but much luck.

Here in the b-movie challenge, i spent him the believe that bananas could change destiny. So he fights an alien robot with bananas. I am serious.
Umikiui sticks to the robot and tries to defeat him with her bites.

In the movie, yunuxx plays yunuxx. That keeps the costs low beause there is no need for an additional character design!

Brad Buffalo as Colonel B.
The 48 years old husband of sara b. he is the stereotype of all movie colonels. He wears that eighties sunglasses, smokes cigars, hates pacifism and loves to laugh at physical weak persons (or aliens). He seems to be the ultimate badass military guy, but in followship with his wife he is as docile as a old teddybear.
His hobbies are: playing football, watching old rambo-movies and mistreating civilians. Sometimes he also watches love romances in tv.
Because he hates abnormal people like yunuxx, he must kill evil invaders.
If you let him choose between a gun and a banana, guess what he does (after he shot you). Yes, he kills the banana, too.

B. Married as Sara B.
Colonel b.s beloved 39 years old wife. She is a grumping and eternally babbling woman who dislikes dirt, love romances and disobedient aliens and husbands. She rescues yunuxx everytime her husband wants to kill him. Sara b. is afraid of… turtles. Especially evil ones with button eyes. Besides that, she knows no fear. She is a living weird dream to alien invaders. And she wears pink shirts! Aaaaaah…!

Alien B-ings
Beware hooomans, we come to destroy your planet called uuurth. We need your brainz. Resistaaance is foootile.
The extraterrestrials come to earth to cleanse the universe of bad b-movies and to collect brains. Their worst enemies they face within yunuxx, colonel b and his wife, umikiui and bananas.
They are green, have huge brains, antennas and evil plans and get confused by yunuxx’ stupidity. „what is that urthling communicating?“ – „it tells about how funny it is to play with small bugs.“ – „we are evil. We destroy urth. Urthling must flee in panic.“ – „it does not. It now talks about painting wooden doors with a color named black. It has a terrible voice.“

Umikiui
This turtle is sometimes evil (supposed by yunuxx). She often bites him when he’s not aware. Generally, she bites whenever there’s a chance. On the other side, she is a cute animal with button eyes and sometimes strange behaviour (lived to long by yunuxx’ side). And she is the world’s fastest moving turtle! When you don’t look at her, she can move as fast as a supersportcar!!!11one
The turtle-logo on yunuxx’ clothes are a reference to Umikiui.

some silly first ideas i had, yunuxx and umikiui fighting some robots with bananas (silly fighting style: check) and colonel b. bombing some aliens and laughing at them (weird action: check).

i will put in three aliens; of course the later will vary in the shape of their brains (brains: check).
but no idea what to do with sara b. - perhaps wielding a dustcleaner or fighting an alien after taking a bath (sexy woman: check).

started doodling some poses, here’s that with yunuxx and umikiui.

currently thinking about what elements i will use in the work:

  • yunuxx, umikiui, colonel b and his wife for the “good” ones
  • three aliens (two of them are squabbling with the other), two robots for the “bad” ones
  • bananas!
  • a good explosion oder two are always fine! additionally, i will use them to separate the two sides of the image

i’m planning to build in some mistakes, for example the extraterrestrials squabbling with themselves: they’re poking with their huge brains against each other because of the few room the have in the image. or sara b discovering dust at the border of the image (like it is shown up in the previous post). :smiley:

so, now i will enter the weekend to think about the challenge; hopefully i’ll return with a composition doodle.

again i’m not really happy with this concept, although it promises muchmuchmuch fun for painting.

now, i’m going with the idea of some kind of bad fantasymovies with barbarians, blood, gore, bad sculpted dragons and that stuff.
i remember that “the barbarians”-movie with the wrestling-twins playing gore and kutchek, what matches my imagination of a b-movie.

my idea how to involve “b-movie”:
two b_adass b_arbarianz fighting each other, with "b"s in their names.
some b_lood, b_rutal b_attles, b_eerdrinking b_arbarians and mayhap a b_oneripping b_ragon. oops, dragon.

the title could be:

  • “the B_arbarian MOVIE!”
  • “BLOOD & DEVASTATION” (for a barbarian theme, caps always do fine :smiley: )
  • “B_arbarian B_rawl”
  • “B_lood B_rawl”
    -…whatever :surprised

ok, here it is.

bhargr and bruin are enemies… they are chiefs of their barbarian clans, which live on the same land.
and there are dragons and other hostile creatures, too.
every day are fierce battles fought, and everytime bhargr and bruin meet, they duel until both surrender because of exhaustion until the next day and so on…

in the background of the doodle, there is a big brawl between their clans, and a dragon and another creature are there, too. perhaps on the ground i will add some empty and broken beer barrels. and puddles of mud and blood.

the image should carry the title “Blood Brawl - the B(arbarian) MOVIE”, it seems to me to fit in the flat story.

next step:
put in the lines and started painting with the first colors.
some difficulties of balancing the equilibrium between bhargr and bruin, perhaps bruin will get some kind of subtle glowing eyes.
like the red hair of bhargr, but don’t know if i should desaturate it a little bit.

thinking about what lightsource for the foreground i will use. frontal light for the fighting chiefs?

flipped the image and tested some light sources (torches to the left and right).

modified bruins dress and gave bhargr boots.

thinking about the backgrounds for the heads of the two in the upper third. bhargr could get a beer tankard and some shiny treasures (or women) in the background, while bruin is set in front of a burning village. or maybe a sleeping dragon.
what do you think?

mostly doing corrections of shapes and adding more colors. some barrels in the lower third planned.
perhaps i will add bruin a bearskull. bhargr now has a scar and an earring.

heya bran, what an interesting lesson in setting up a composition. seeing the intersecting lines, very simplistic but effective. this one i do like.

hopefully you feel this is the concept for you. the lighting and detailing is coming along real nicely…Needs a banana in there somewhere though haha,

maybe a banana will be added in reference to my earlier concepts. thinking about a barbarian in the background raising a banana instead of a weapon into the air, lol. :smiley:

today, i plan to modify the dresses of the two fighting barbarians. bhargr (the guy) will get some tattoos and elsewhere additional plate (or a part of a scale mail) with some spikes on it to let him look more fierce, bruin will get another dresschange and maybe a bearskull on her head or a warpainting. because bhargr has more contrast than bruin, she needs something that puts her on the same level of contrast. anyone got an idea what this could be? :slight_smile:

bhargrs weapons will be modified, too.
and what about a global enemy in the image, like an evil (nonalcoholic) king, a dark sorceress or something else? :scream:

on and on and on and on…
after seeing the incredible works of other participants, i’m somehow disencouraged. :smiley:
but i won’t leave this challenge. what i’ve begun i’ll bring to the finish, wether it’s good or not.

so, here’s what happened:
resized the image to 4500 px in height. the computer gets veryveryvery slow when painting with a brush size larger than 300 and saving the file needs about two minutes. :smiley:

redesigned the dress of bruin and added some details to bhargr in the middle. worked on bruin in the top third.

what’s to come:
in the next wip there will be a banana in the background and i’ll work on the crowd. :stuck_out_tongue:

but i have no clue about a global enemy. and, where to position him. maybe i can expand the canvas to get some free room for him (or her).

if there is something to crit (and there is i’m sure), please feel free to write it down here. :slight_smile:

after rearranging the “heroes”, i thought of filling the important triangle in the middle with the shared enemy, a giant, fat, ugly cyclops named brawler.
i had some ideas like a nagaqueen, an undead king, a sexy sorceress, an evil priest and a demon warrior - but while sketching them in, brawler brought the best b-movieish feeling of them in.
if you have other suggestions or thoughts, please let me know. :slight_smile:

worked also on the crowds and decided for the dragon and a hydra at the sides.

today it’s going faster than i expected.
brawler is almost done, added a lightsource from above as a test. worked at the crowd (the banana is now turned upwards :smiley: ) and have much fun.

i’m coming close to the end.
worked on the creatures at the left and the right and added some skeletons in the middle. clouds for the “sky” and first attempt for the lettering.

don’t know, but it seems to me to become a very busy image.

there will be a border around the image to let it look like an old parchment (hope this is the correct word) that has seen some bad days. :smiley:

Oh, Yes! this is looking nice. This looks like it’d have a potential of an epic movie, even if its done whit a low budget.
There is something weird whit the female barbarian. I think its the abdomen or her left leg… I can’t tell what it is… I just see its a little odd. Sorry I can’t be of more help there. Might be wrong too… She’s having the belt much higher than I’m used to

yeah, it does not seem very b-moviish, that’s why i will put in the lettering with manymany b’s in it (some postes above, it is explained :smiley: ).

the belt of bruin i’ve put in that height because in a reference to the cheap fantasy-movies of the eighties, where women generally wore them as high. maybe i’ll put it lower, it’s worth a try. :slight_smile:
