Software: Photoshop

bog of the rotten scum

who ever did evil, won’t ascend to heaven.
they stay on earth.
some curious tourists discovered an unknown spot in a grand bog, where a mob of undead criminals - drug dealers, homicidal maniacs, bruisers, mass murderers and all what was evil in elder times, too - ambushes them at night.
well, that’s the story. a b-(splatter)movie showing crude violence and buckets of blood don’t needs much more story.
there are no heroes, the whole movie is a carnage orgy what can be done with a low budget.
this could be a (fictive) b-movie of the eighties.

my idea was to create a dark coverartwork for that movie, that has those special bad contrasts between the image and the writings on it.
it shows the undead scum looming out of the bog’s mist during a thunderstorm. against the gloomy sky, some hung skeletons dangle from the trees.

fonts used:

  • impact
  • britannic bold
  • crackles (“in oldschool 2D”) - note: don’t know if i spelled it right, i had to work on different computers during the challenge.

modified:

  • nc-17 .eps-file from the mpaa (motion picture association of america) modified to nc-99

thoughts:
this is my first challenge. painting a b-movie-image, was indeed a huge challenge, because i never was interested in those films. i learned more than i would have learned in a year, and that’s a great reward for me. participating in this event among the great artists of the cgsociety is an experience that i won’t forget.
but there were some problems, too. i am a trainee and i had to work on the challenge during classes, so i had to listen with the ears to the teachers while staring at photoshop and thinking about the weekly exams.

we had often to change the rooms and the computers. working on imacs and the next day on a p4-windows-pc is… evil. i lost some challenge files last week, but some could be recovered.

thanks:

  • … to all artists that gave me feedbacks and motivated me. thank you mates!
  • … to my class and especially our tutors who gave me the time working on my entry during classes
  • … to the buckets of coffee

Congrats on finishing, Bran! :applause:
Amazing brush work and colors! Even the characters are looking slow to move, the whole image is full of dynamic and is looking very dramatic! Superb work!

Yeah, and thank you for feedback!

Great to see you cross the finish line, Bran. Especially considering you went through 4 different concepts before settling on this one. It really is finished beautifully, STRONG b-movie theme present.

How did you get that wonderful textured look. i never know how to get textures like this.

Fantastic and congratulations on finishing!

peleng and lightsovereign,
many thousand thanks to you!
great to have you here!

just take a layer with some huuuuge brushstrokes on it, mix some textures with varying colors onto it, put the layer mode to “soft light” (i think it is so called, i worked with the german version of ps where it is known as “weiches licht”) and play with the layers opacity. i used 76% opacity and some additional colorsettings, increased saturation and added another layer with texturebrushstrokes on it (there’s a great tutorial of linda bergqvist’s site furiae.com about creating texture brushes!).

Congrats on finishing a great piece! The texture you added does a lot to grunge up the smooth paints and is a great effect (although perhaps a bit strong… just imho.)
And I love the lower right corner: Oldschool 2d FTW!

#93

Good job, bran!
Impressive output… it’s like you did 3 Images for this challenge.
Congrats, you’ve done very well.

#94

Hey Bro!

Congratulations on an Awesome Finish!!!

I love the final texture look you gave everything, and the title works so well!

Cheers to an incredible competition! I must say you did freakin amazing for your first challenge!
And I loved all the ideas you kept coming up with before this bog idea, they were all fantastic

Cheers!

Fatastic Finish!

IT gave me a creepy feeling. Congrats:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

walrus, thank you for looking in  yeah, the texture is strongly visible, but i think, that is okay.
that is a problem when i’m working on different computers: not all monitors are calibrated, and not everywhere i’m allowed to calibrate them because of missing admin-rights.
overall, i’m really happy with that what i produced. and that’s a good reward.
btw i would like to congratulate you for your entry. its great to see how professionals work.

yakonusuke, it would be better for me if i had started with only concept and finish that instead of reorientating myself a few times, hehe. your work is one of the most convincing entries, and it gave me some smiles looking at it. especially the “lvl 99” - that was a huge lol for me.
geeks rock! but i miss a monochrome version of it :stuck_out_tongue:

bergquist, great you’ve finished your work! now barbarians can raid the jury and plunder their beer supplies.
and thank you for stopping by and motivate me! best wishes to you!

aven99, thank you. when it creates a creepy feeling, it shows me the concept works.

after a few attempts you have chosen the best idea for the concept BMovie
Congratulations for excellent work

Cheers!

#104

Cool pic  I like the mood, and zombie design. The details like hand protruding from the water in the right part of image, or zomibie eating someone’s leg are very nice and give a lot of life to the scene. Congratulations

#105

hey andias and ros1, i’m sorry i couldn’t reply earlier, much to do in the last days. many thanks for looking in!
