Latest Update: Final Image: The Day Cthulhu Rocked My World

#2

Hey everyone, long time watcher first time poster.

Here is my first concept, inspired by the movies ‘So I married an Axe Murderer’ and ‘I married a monster from Outer Space’. When you lift the veil, you never know what you’re gonna get - just like a box of chocolates.

#3

My second idea, inspired by ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ and various giant monster movies.

Cthulhu awakens. But instead of spreading terror, why not ROCK and shred that axe instead?

#4

Great!!!
Cthulhu rocks :buttrock:

Good Luck with this!

#5

I’ve decided to go for the Cthulhu concept.

Using the late great Randy Rhoads as my main inspiration for Cthulhu’s pose, a jackson randy rhoads guitar and some fishing boats for the foreground image.

#6

Good luck, can’t wait to see the end product!

#7

I’ve been ill for the past week but I’ve managed to do some preliminary sketches and a speedpaint to help psyche me up for my main picture. Had to study some octopus’ to get a feel for the subject.

Time to get cracking on the main picture.

danzums: Thank you. Hopefully I can finish on time.

najjaci: Thanks! I will try to make it as metal as possible without straying from the theme. :buttrock:

Starting off with a rough greyscale picture. Haven’t added the guitar or foreground image yet until I’m completely satisfied with his pose. I really wanted to do a detailed sky and it will be a shame to cover it up when I add his wings. Adding wings are my biggest concern at the moment because I’m afraid it will throw the whole composition out of whack.

Hey Mike,

Nice concepts, really original. The sketches abd the value study look cool, like the perspective in the image. Good luck and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

#11

Changed the dimensions of the canvas and laid out some more details. Sketchy pair of wings added which, as expected, sort of annoyed me.

13 days left…feeling anxious.

#12

Ferx: Thanks man. I’m looking forward to finishing this.

#13

Added a grunge border and some refinement to Cthulhu’s head. Also the guitar details.

#14

Added some background and foreground details but I still need to balance them out some more. Also need to study some pictures of waves so I can make the ocean alot less calm.

#15

Added some waves and texture. I keep moving the boat around every time I update but I think I’m finally happy with where it is at this point.

#16

Almost time to add color. Wasn’t happy with some of tentacles so I changed it around a bit. Same with the wings.

#17

Looking good so far - Composition is nice and values are working well at this point. Looking forward to your color pass.

#18

Pretty much satisfied with the grayscaling. Time to start with the colors. I’ll add all other details in the color phase.

#19

First part of coloring. Aiming for a cheesy color scheme.

#20

that’s looking very good! I really like the composition and the idea, shading is also looking good but perhaps it’s too dark for my taste… maybe you could make Cthulhu look even bigger by blending it a bit more with the background, with some kind of fog… just an idea, keep going!
