B-Movie Entry: Mathias Herbster

If you can’t see it clearly: It’s a tiny tank he uses as an ashtray -> thanks for the idea rattlesnake!

#22

Lovely idea, really nice composition, lighting and blurring in the foreground!! Great models too of course, the central character is great!!

#23

Okay you asked for it
I like the ashtray-tank, I wouldn’t worry about people not recognizing it, it’s nice when an image has details to discover.
I don’t know about the microphone or the movie reels (while the clapper belongs in front of the camera and looks like being randomly left there during a break). The story came across very well before these additions. You did a great job with the DOF and scale alone.
I think the costume’s head is a good idea, I’m not sure about the placing. But I don’t know where it would fit better. Maybe it would be more clear if it was turned so you can see the opening where Ed puts his head in. Now it could be mistaken for a seperate monster eating a skyscraper

About the airplanes. Now I got curious and looked up what kind of planes Americans would’ve defended New York from Godzilla with in the fifties (this is your fault). And I personally think that the shapes of these early jet fighters are more interesting and more to the genre than either modern jets or older propeller machines like you’ve sketched now. See Wikipedia here, here, here, here, here, here. And if this gets me on your ignore list I don’t blame you

Render looks sweet! I like the idea too. Good luck finishing it up!

#25

nice!!..i like the paint overs u did here, i think lights on the roof fit quite nice

#26

Nice composition - it’s looking quite good. One suggestion would be to consider playing warms against cools.

#27

@ archaeotect: Ignore list? You mean friends list! Your posts help me a lot! Thanks for the Wikipedia links, you’re right those jets will fit into the 50s universe much better! I haven’t done my plane research jet but I definetly will before going into modeling! will keep you’re opinion about the various items in mind. I’ve got a two days trip ahead of me when I can spend some time rethinking about all the latest ideas. Thanks again!

#28

Real good idea, and very good composition, I realy like the way the man look tired of his job  (maybe should he look more tired ?)

I think this image is on the way of something very interresting !

#29

Hi Guys! Modelled the Chrysler Building for the Background, the spotlights and the cinema. Temporarly removed planes. They will be back when the new models are finished. Next up will be some more tweaking in the foreground, some new details and the last building in the right corner.

#30

very interesting idea!

i think the basic composition of objects are ok.
and i think,to make the whole piece more dramatic, you can add more unbelievable items into the scene, but be cautious to not to distract audience from the key figure.

#31

Thanks Magicbrushlv. You’re right. It’s not easy to know when and where to add more details that tell part of the story and where they distract the viewing experience.
Short question to all who read this post: Does anyone have a tutorial on how to calibrate your pc-monitor. It seems that my images are too dark on most monitors.

#32

Hi folks!
New Jets and some color changes. What do you think of it?

#33

Hi! Now it’s probably a bit late, but I just wanted to say that I like the new jets (big surprise here) and that I like both colour schemes, if I had to choose I’d probably go for the warmer colours, simply because it makes such a friendly image.
Good luck finishing your image - I’m lucking forward to the final version!

B-Movies often suffer from imitating big Hollywood productions while not being able to raise enough money. Because of worse equipment, lousy actors or crude scripts, small budgets can be spotted on every frame of those movies.
As an actor, screenwriter, producer and director Ed Wood knew the effort of making a movie. Unfortunately he couldn’t advance as a director in Hollywood, so his constant struggle remained. Criticized by moviegoers and critics he was even elected to be the worst director of all time. Determined he continued his small step towards his idol Orson Welles until the end of his life.
My submission is an homage to a true artist in every way.

Fun image. A lot of details in here. I like the guy’s shirt under the costume and cool flake textures. Nicely done.

Thank you very much Headsmell & Ferx! The whole challenge was a great experience to me. There are so many great final-paintings and 3D-images in this forum!
