B-Movie Entry: Mathias Herbster
This is one idea I am developing for this Challenge. It’s basically a documentation of the hard working conditions of a B-Movie Monster.
I am thinking about doing it in a more stylized way in 3DsMax. Perhaps I am going to change the camera position to a lower angle. With strong depth of field I want to emphasize the scale of the miniature City.
So, what do you think of the idea? Have you got any sugestions? I’d love to here from you guys!
Hi folks!
I’ve changed the story of my image:
Instead of a hungry b-movie actor who is scuffing a sandwich I want Ed Wood Jr to be the main protagonist. After hours of work on set he fell asleep while reeding a book about his great inspiration ‘Orson Welles’. I will keep the setting of a minature town where he’s sitting on a tiny movie cinema.
I’m getting into the production phase right now and spend the last two days modeling my protagonist and am optimistic to render my final image in 13 days. Good bye my friends!
Day 5 in production:
Texturing and posing of the character mostly done. Next up is composition of the surroundings. I want to start by quickly painting the landscape so I can be more flexible and start with modeling when I am pleased.
Wish me luck!
Hey Mathias,
Hhahahahaha totally cool idea, love the approach
This idea has a great potential.
The model looks really nice. Good luck and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!
Modeled roughly the main geometry for the final composition and tuned some minor details like face expression, hair position, tale placement. At the top of the image there will be some movie lights, ropes and chains hanging from the ceiling. Next up will be more refinement on the character and modeling and shading of the environment.
Thanks Ferx for your nice comments. They came right in time for me to get back to optimism!
Tuned the pose of Ed Wood a bit and modeled 3 of 5 skyscrapers. In the next steps I want to finish my work on the skyscrapers and the humans in the foreground. I also want to add a movie clapper on which the name Ed Wood Jr. So let’s get back to work!
My daily update for today:
Once again I worked on Ed’s face. This time I was working on the texture and his teeth. Same procedure with his book. I don’t know which color the book should have. If you’ve got some idea or suggestion I would be really glad to hear it! Perhaps you ve got an idea to improve the composition, modelling or the storytelling of the picture it would be awesome if you could tell me.
I also added the movie clap to help telling the story of Ed Woods Sequel to “Plan 9 from outer space”. The title on the clap is a placeholder and not final.
Phantastic idea! You instantly sympathize with the main character.
And I think “Plan 9 from Japan” is a great title for a Godzilla movie by Ed Wood
The fighter planes don’t look like they’re from Wood’s era, but I don’t know much about planes and couldn’t care less. Lovely image!
Man I cant believe more people haven’t commented on this!
Awesome image
looking forward to seeing more updates

Thank you Archaeotect, Headsmell and Korendo for your nice comments and suggestions!
@Archaeotect: You’re damn right those planes aren’t from Ed Wood’s Era. Somehow I didn’t thought of it before, but I will exchange them with some much cooler 50’s planes!
@Korendo: A head mask would be cool! I need to figure out a good place for it and try it with a rough version. Perhaps on one of the skyscrapers.
haha really love this one man!!..its looking very sweet, maybe a microphene haging ? or some lights visible at the top? or a little table with cigar holder…u know cigarette break…
very cool entry dude! :bounce:
wow nice work man… totally great and unique idea… The lighting is great as well. Looking cool so far… Congrats
After hearing all your great suggestions and ideas I had to test most of them by sketching them roughly on top of the last rendering. I’ve kept my favourites in the picture you see here. In the next days I will think about which items to keep and which ones I should leave out. What do you think of the various items I painted in? After all these days working on the image I can’t trust my eyes anymore so every advice from you guys will be more than welcomed!
