Great work on the rocket…Like the colors of choice as well.
B-Movie Entry: Mark David
mdavid,
Impractical is the perfect word to describe this whole competition. Impractical buy shiny and fun to look at. You’ll have that in abundance with your entry. Especially after eating the astronaut, the inguana spits him out, then crushes him like a flea. :buttrock:
Speaking of impracticality, I think if the windows were a bit more oval, and not perfect circles, it might help in the retro fifties rocket look. Maybe only have one large cockpit type structure. Maybe I’m trying to hard to be helpful.
Ignore me, and continue to impress with your attack on the giant lizard.
Hey Mark,
The textures are looking really good on the rocket. Love the retro style on it, specially the impractical fins hahahaha
Great work and waiting for more !! Cheers!!
That made me laugh! So very true. Where would we be without artistic liscence right! lol. Your rocket modelling is so clean. Any kid would love to get their hands on one of those! Can’t wait to see more.
Great start on the retro rocket Mark, to me it screems for a chrome material, but either way you’ve nailed the style.

Thanks Mathias. Simplicity in this case has a lot to do with not having time to do the complicated stuff yet, but I appreciate what you say about the shape of the rocket
Yongkiat
Thank you Yongkiat. I appreciate your kind words. I hope you like the look of the new colours though. Based on a comment from Steve (handlebar) I was just too tempted to go for a metallic rocket
makaron
Thanks Mona. Hopefully I will find some time to model the lizard for this scene, but I do enjoy modelling these simple shapes too
soapy
Thanks buddy. I’d like to see a lot more done by this stage but that will depend on other things

Hey Cori, yep it’s the impracticality within B-Movies that arguably makes them more fun than ‘A-movies’. By the sounds of your excellent visualisation of the lizard storyline you must have seen a good few of them in your time.
Thanks to you too, for your fine suggestion. I’m talking about the oval window idea. I’ve put in one large oval window and I can see the beauty of your single large cockpit idea too. It’s likely that the top section of the rocket won’t be visible in the final render, but if that changes I just might make some more changes.
Ferx
Thanks matey. Glad you like the impractical fins. More impractical stuff is on its way.
BUZZFX
Hey Lorne, thanks for your comment! I appreciate it. Yep, artistic license is a great gift, when it’s not being used as a great excuse. More power to us!
handlebar
Thank you Steve. You are just so right about the colour. So I’ve changed it and I think it looks better now. I hope you like the change
In a perfect world I’d have more time to put into this. But in a perfect world we might not have B-Movies. Thus my dilemma: the theme is just too much fun, but I doubt I’ll have time to finish.
So rather than rush through and make a mess of it, I’d prefer to make my mess slowly. In that spirit I present a slight change to the rocket. Many thanks to Steve and Cori for their suggestions which I believe have made this thing better.
Regarding the ladder, I take this B-movie thing very seriously, just as regular visitors to my threads will know I take everything very seriously. You see, you couldn’t store a ladder of that length in the rocket’s living quarters and one which folds or stores in segments is far too A-movie for my liking. So sophisticated movie-goers would realise the ladder came from the props department, probably at 7 in the morning just in time before they started filming. Unsophisticated movie goers would either:
a) not think that deeply, or
b) assume the astronauts were lucky enough to find it on the planet (the uninhabited planet)
Now I prefer (b) by a long shot. I like the idea of our heroes finding the perfect ladder lying around on the uninhabited planet, and then realising they’re not able to get down to it.
As for the new metallic colour of the rocket, I am sorely tempted to place some trees/buildings/crew and other Earth-type things in the environment channel. The idea of some film set stuff reflecting off the rocket in this outer-space film is a bit too tempting to ignore
- Mark
Nice decal very stylish. Maybe that ship should be festooned with dozens of corporate sponsor stickers? Could be funny. hmm, on second thought maybe that wouldn’t suit the theme.
Love the new look! And your thoughts around the ladder are as usual filled with insight - we don’t want the small details get in the way of the illusion!
Excellent also with the reflection map - I can picture the director in one of those high chairs with a cigar and a megaphone in his hand.
Fantastic Mark i love the idea of the b-movie set, the odd boom mike showing in the shot and reflections.
Haha, very cool, that reflecting metal is really bringing the shape out, and I just love the oval hatch, going in the opposite direction, nifty Idea!
I agree about the time being too short for this great topic, we could need more time!
Keep it up!

Hi Mark,
nice update. :applause:
I really like the idea of putting trees etc. in the environment channel. Maybe you could also add a fingerprint of one of the props maker on the rocket, which would totally ruin the scale of it.
Looking forward to what ever fun will come.
Torsten
Hey Mark
Cool update, love the textures on the rocket.
Like a lot the new ideas and direction for your concept. A B-Movie set with props and miniature stuff its a really cool concept.
Great work so far and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!
soapy
You are right - what you say about being festooned with corporate sponsor logos. If this was reality I’m sure that would happen.
Gunilla
I’m glad you like the idea of the reflections. Disbelief plays an essential part in any B-Movie, whether it comes from the corny plot, cheap special effects, laughable props or ham-fisted dialogue. I will be rigorous in how I lower my standards.
handlebar
Thanks Steve. Yeah, a boom mike. How could I forget the boom mike? It’s almost tempting to just have the tip of one hanging down over the centre of the image.
varma
Thanks Mathias. I’m glad you like the way the rocket has been going. I must admit that, with the amount of time I have left I am becoming more and more glad that the theme is B-Movie and not Sophisticated Special Effects Movie.
Russel-Nash
That is a really nice idea about the fingerprint. Although I always imagined that the rocket ship would be built life-size in the studio, because a man will be climbing down from it. Which would suggest the hint of nails and planks in the surface. That might still happen.
Ferx
Thanks buddy
MartinNielsen
Thanks Martin. Yep, you are right about the shiny surface. Something less like more chrome would be a good thing, I think
It’s been fun to fire up Cinema and push some more polygons around.
This is the lizard that will be fitted with toy horns to play the role of monster. In the movie, it would open its mouth and utter an ear-splitting shrieking roar - sort of a Godzilla kind of sound.
I might take this mesh through ZBrush for some bumps and spines and scales, or maybe not. It depends on how much I can remember or re-learn. Because I live and breathe Photoshop and Illustrator in my regular work I will not pretend for a moment that I am any sort of expert or regular user of ZBrush. But I love seeing what some of the folks here can do with that software and so it keeps tempting me to at least try…
- Mark
Really nice start on the lizard. ![]()
Looking forward to hear the Godzilla kind of sound.
Torsten
Good start on the lizard. Some bumps from ZBrush could be really cool.
Zbrush is a program I wish I had. I’d love to see what I could come up with.
