B-Movie Entry: Fernando Garcia

#41

Hey Fer,

Cool update. Like a lot the face expressions on the three ladys, and the lighting works well on them.
Think Walrus have good points, but I like the contrast between the tension of the heroes and the calm of the lady with the broom, only a personal opinion.

Great work … y a chambear que esto ya casi se acaba !!

I can see Walrus’ point with the non-threatening pose of the one leaning on the broom. But I can also imagine that the zombie cleaning lady is pausing for a moment to savor the anticipated feast! lol The drool helps. Seriously I don’t have a problem with the poses, I think the characters put you in mind of what (elderly?) maybe run-down and tired cleaning ladies would really look like and that makes it funny to think that even though they are zombies they are still stuck to move and act like old ladies. Great job.

walrus
- hey, thanks a lot for your crits!…so…yes, I think you are right with the poses, most of them are quite stiff… the reason for that is that they were supposed to be moving really slow, just closing the circle around them, moving like zombies… but still, even zombies have some kind of movement and better poses, so I will try to make some changes so that they match the rest of the image better, although I don’t think I’ll change much (one leg here, an arm there… should be enough… maybe) well I don’t know, we will see…

Freelah - hey, another Fernando! thanks for posting, I’m glad that you like the lighting, thank you!

Fer el de las chelas - hey, thanks again, well I think I will try some changes in the poses, because I see walrus point, but they will never be close to the dynamism of the main characters… well I don’t know, I have to try, there is still a bit of time for experimentation

David - hmm, I’m still not sure wether to make them zombies or not, all of you seem to like the idea, and I reckon that it makes more sense, but for the moment they are not zombies, just evil-possessed cleaning ladies… maybe I could make them like “cheap” zombies, covered in blood and dirt, like that big guy from plan 9 from outer space, or like people dressed up as zombies, instead of actual corpses full of holes and rottening, which I personally don’t like so much… thanks for your comments!! :wise:

#44

Ah, okay, if they’re zombies then they don’t need super action poses. What I didn’t get from looking at your image was that they were supposed to be zombies, just creepy old people. (Who sometimes drool, too!) Maybe a clawed hand reaching out here or there, some tattered clothing (or skin!) might help send that message. Good luck!

#45

Interesting concept man, I really like the idea. I can already figure the name of the movie: “The village of the Damn Old”:stuck_out_tongue:

I like the second color test, for me it´s the one that allows for more constrast & detailing between heroes/old guys and also supports a bit of fog to enhance the mood.

Waiting for the updates…

#46

Aztan - yay, thanks for the suggestion, hehe, I had no idea of how to entitle it, for the moment I was going for “A gangster with a shotgun and the princess from Mars VS the evil-possesed cleaning ladies in the lost lighthouse”, but I think it’s quite long  …just joking… or maybe not
I think that for the background I’ll go for purple near the horizon and darker blue in the sky, that could be a good compromise between the 2 last options…

walrus - yes, well, I guess they are zombies now, hehe, it wasn’t even clear in my mind, so it’s not clear cause they are not zombies… yet. Perhaps they are really recent fresh zombies, they didn’t have time to rotten much

#47

I’ve spent some time detailing the main characters, I’m more or less satisfied with them, and I’ve also worked a bit in those 2 evil cleaning ladies in the far background, making them a bit more active, and zombifying them… I think they will be more like infected or possesed by a virus, than dead people back from the cemetery, so specially in the ones that are closer I will add “something” to their skin, break their clothes, and that’s it…

#48

I think I finished shading everything in the image, except maybe some touches in the floor and background…
so this last week I’ll complete the color, I will try to do a traditional watercolor for the background color, scan it, and overlay it to get some nice textures… I’ve never done anything like that before, but I enjoy experimenting :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

#49

Hey Fer,

Looking really nice, like a lot the ambient mood on the image.
Perhaps you need to raise a bit the contrast on the foreground lady and on the two main characters .

Your idea for the background sounds totally cool, cant wait to see the results. Great work and waiting for more updates. Cheers!! <<----- (más chelas bien muertas para la pintada :D)

#50

Thanks Fer, I made the foreground characters darker and more contrasty, does it look better now?

This morning I painted the background with watercolors, which I think gives some nice textures, the only problem is that characters, being on top of that, wont have those textures, so I will have to give them some new textures at the end…
I have started also giving some basic colors to the characters, I have no idea of what to do with the girl, her face is red at the moment cause she’s supposed to be from Mars, but I’m not sure that it reads well…

#51

Looking good man… it really worked giving the main characters more contrasting colors.
Why dont you try blurring the granny in the front a little, to get a DoF effect.
And about the mars princess, you are right, it doesnt work that well the red tone for her skin, probably because its in the same color range of the old zombies. Why dont you try with a green color for her skin (I know… its a cliche the “green men from Mars”) but probably it will give you a nice contrast with the purple tones of the background. Im quite sure it will attract the eye to the main characters :stuck_out_tongue: (even in the thumbnail).

Just one final push man!! Good luck!! I will be waiting for your final piece:thumbsup:

#52

Hey Fer,

Like the color palette on the image. The texture on the lighting house looks really nice.
Maybe, like you say, the red face for the girl don´t read well. Perhaps you can go for a pale green or pale blue ( a bit on cyan value). I think that the gloves can be a bit more red and you can add a pair of red boots for the girl. Only silly ideas

Great work and waiting for more updates. Cheers!! (no mas chelas en estos últimos días, sino no acabas :D)

#53

This is looking really good. I like the perspective and palette you’re using. Your character designs great. About your Martian Princess, what about changing the colour of her costume instead? Perhaps that’d bring out the redness in her skin? Try any alternatives as thumbnails first to eliminate any detail and you’ll be able to see more clearly what works.

All the best man.

#54

Thanks for your comments guys!
I’ve followed your suggestions and changed the color of her skin to green, because red wasn’t working no matter what I did with her clothes, and blue, well blue could have looked good one year ago but now it would look like some kind of weird avatar imitation…

Octavio - well, I think that cliches are ok in this case, B-movies are full of cliches, so I’ve followed your suggestion and made her green… and about the DoF effect, personally I don’t like it, it’s just a matter of personal taste… thanks for your ideas!

Fer - yup! red boots and gloves, thank you compadre! no beers? so… tequilas then?

Anthony - thanks for your post! I’ve been trying your suggestion today, I’ve spent several hours selecting different pieces and adjusting the colors, but at the end the red face wasn’t looking good, she looked like she had some heavy sunburn or something… thank you!

update in 3…2…1…

#55

I’ve spent some hours today adjusting the colors of the characters, specially the girl… as suggested, I changed her skin color to green, and added some other small touches of green to the image to compensate it… I found it a bit difficult to keep some kind of color balance to the image and not to turn it into a rainbow… I’m still not completely satisfied with it but I think it looks better…

#56

It’s looking nice, not at all rainbowy. The darker values on the characters work well to make them pop. I like the green on the woman - it’s really clear now that she’s an alien. I find it a little odd how the cut-out ovals on her legs are 2 different sizes between the inside and outside of her thighs… do you even need the inside-thigh one?
not sure what else you have to do with it, though. Looks pretty close to me. Good luck!

#57

thanks walrus! Really appreciated! Well, it might look good for you already, but that’s because you are not seeing any close ups, hehe… All those colors are just quickly laid in, not respecting the borders between shapes at all, so I still have to work on it… I think you are right about those green holes in her legs, I think I’ll erase the inner one, or give it a different shape… Thanks for noticing!

#58

waiting for final image. It already looks sweet.

Software: Photoshop

James Grilleto, a.k.a. Jimmy Trigger, a.k.a. Jim Easy-finger, a.k.a. Jimmy Silent, had never imagined himself in such situation. It should have been an easy job, just a short visit to a farmer who lived close to the seaside, but his trip was suddenly interrupted when his car was halted by those mysterious lights, and in few seconds he was surrounded by strange green men… That was a mere 5 hours ago, but it seemed like ages now, somehow, as hard to believe as it can be, and with the whole humanity to choose from, the Queen of these foreign green people had fall in love with him, and now they were both in big trouble, being attacked by an horde of old women…
Apparently, the green men did not come alone, they had brought some viruses with them, innocent viruses, which in contact with the cleaning products from Earth, mutated and attacked those who were closer to them in that moment: the cleaning ladies. A couple of hours after the first mutation, all the cleaning ladies in the state had run amok, possessed by the evil virus, and now they were attacking every living being on their way…
As Jim prepared to fight until death the horde of grannies that was slowly surrounding them, he thought… -If only her skin wasn’t that lovely green color, none of this would’ve happened… if only I had told her that I am gay…

there you go, Piotr

Thanks a big lot to everyone who helped me with their comments and ideas (crazy ideas are thanked too), getting and giving feedback is the best part of these challenges, I’ve learned a lot seeing you guys working…

So I think it’s finished for the moment, I wanted to add rain but I didn’t have time enough, so maybe I will continue it and post the result in this thread, for those of you who are subscribed to it… I did a quick test and I think it looks better and much more dramatic, but I would need to make the characters’ skin look wet, the hair, and the floor too would be affected… and that’s too many changes for the last moment…

I hope you like it!
