Jpg, gif and png file types area supported. The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

Click “Save Changes”

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I can’t seem to upload an avatar, I only have one option available to me, and that’s to not use an avatar:

Could it be because I’m an uber n00b member here?

Another avatar question for you. :slight_smile: Seems like it’s always a bit difficult getting an avatar to upload at CG Society, I always have to experiment with different sized images to figure out why one works at one time and not another. Took me over an hour today vs. 5 minutes at CG Hub with identical images, just to compare in case the process can be streamlined better at CG Society.

Basically, I got the image to work once today, deleted it to select a different one, and the one that used to work now doesn’t. I don’t know if this was the case before or not, but it seems that the avatar needs to be 9.8 kb or less now, vs. 24 kb before? That sounds unusually small for an image and everything ends up looking pixelated. Any ideas as to why a larger image worked earlier this morning and now it doesn’t? I appreciate your help, thank you.

Located directly underneath the field to enter your avatar is the maximum image dimensions.

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

Also note that in the FAQs there is the following information

Avatars - How to Use Them

Avatars are the little thumbnail that veteran users on CGTalk have associated with their posts on the forum. Only users that have cleared the first 2 posts are given this privilege. Note that as soon as you reach 2 posts, the ability to use an avatar is not immediate - it may take up to 24 hours before CGTalk batch processes the users to add you to the Registered user list.

How to upload an Avatar (users with over 2 posts only)

Go into “UserCP” -> “Edit Options”.
Scroll down, there is a field to change the avatar.

Hi Kirt,

Yes, I have all of that info practically memorized because I’ve been attempting to upload an avatar for countless numbers of times now over the past year. I truly apologize if I sound too frustrated, but I have wasted alot of time on something as simple as trying to upload an avatar. I’ve just now decided to address this problem in a forum.

I am saying that I was able to upload an image today, as in it actually showed up and worked. Then I decided to change it to something else, an image that for whatever reason didn’t work . Instead of having no avatar, I decided to just go back and use the one that did work until I could figure out why the one I actually wanted to use wasn’t working. But the one that DID work no longer worked anymore, I keep getting this darn message: ‘The file that you have tried to attach is too big. The maximum size is 10000 bytes’, when it is NOT too big and worked only a few minutes before, I just don’t get it-something is not working right.

That is what I am asking about, there is this mysterious thing that happens when attempting to upload avatars sometimes that causes the image to not work on this site. Also, if 19.5 kb is the allowable size, then the 9.8 kb requirement shown on the avatar upload page is a typo. I’m not sure where you’re pasting your info from, but the info shown on my CP page is incorrect then. Is it different if you’re a paid member or something? In case it makes a difference, I am accessing my control panel in the red banner area of the top right-hand corner of the site. Is there a different link that I’m supposed to be going to?

One more bit of info in case it helps solve this issue. I was able to upload my profile picture without any problems. It is under 17kb. I used the same image for my avatar. It did work once today without my receiving an error message about it being too big a file. Perhaps it doesn’t work as an avatar anymore because the restriction changed on avatar size sometime after I removed it today?

If you’re having problems posting an avatar, please post it to this thread and I’ll take a look at it. I don’t know if there is a problem server-side that may be preventing you to upload your avatar (that info is not available to me). Although, I can rule out any possible issues with the image if you post the file that you are trying to upload.

If this is the image you are trying to use, then it should work.

Hah, it worked. What I did was shrink it down to apprx 9 kb using an indexed color (set to 100 colors) png. Seems like the avatar size restrictions got much tighter. The thing that gets me though is why the profile image worked once for the avatar <shrug> ah well, whatever lol
