Autodesk Signs Agreement with Avid Technology to Acquire Softimage

I think its exciting… not only bad things come from this… lighten up guys, its gonna be great!

Its all about services in the end. Autodesk and Adobe are about content creation - Google is more about viewing/searching content then anything else. Nvidia is a provider to both - they key is to find services that all these companies need like a plumber or electrician. The big need now is streaming media - whether thats 3d,video, musicetc…

Maybe Autodesk would by an unheard of streaming 3d media service/code company?

SUBSCRIPTION FEES, FEES, FEES!!

Like they can go any higher!. lol. I purposefully don’t own any of their software because I don’t like paying a yearly subscription fee. I also was asked in a Maxon survey if I would be in favor of paying a yearly subscription fee and I said NO. It’s just a hge money grab IMO. I have never been in favor of monopolies or subscription fees.

I actually think Autodesk is waiting for Pixologic to implement some really cool features and then they’ll buy them up after the hard work is done. I hope not but this is my gut feeling. I don’t feel like any software is safe anymore from Autodesk.

If Autodesk thinks I am going to buy or use ANY of their software then their mistaken. I will always go for the more affordable choice and I would even get out of 3D before coming under the umbrella of Autodesk. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

It’s friday here anyway so i’ll join ya. I’m jumping on the blender bandwagon, this sh#t is wHacK!

#125

Like they can go any higher!.

Apparently, you don’t remember the bad old days of DOS. $15k wasn’t an “unfair” price when there was so little competition.

#126

Autodesk is getting so carried away that I fully expect to see them buy up themselves!

#127

I can’t help myself…even Dumbo can’t believe it…

:argh:

#128

Auto-acquisition. Sounds kinky.

#129

A very sad day! I am going to support houdini as my next choice when I leave the stagnant max I think it’s important to do anything to nurture diversity and competiton in this pickle

#130

They will buy 3d Coat and Andrew will become Prime Minister of the Ukraine!

#131

What’s that? On the horizon! There’s four guys on horses and they’re carrying a burning flag! I think it says Auto-something! The one on the left’s kinda skinny ain’t he?

Seriously though, as a programming geek I’ve always been somewhat more interested in Houdini. Just don’t expect anyone at Softimage who’s disgruntled with this to say so while Autodesk are still paying their wages in these difficult times, they’ll just look for jobs elsewhere… those that still have them. Now, I don’t expect there to be as many job losses as there were when Alias was bought as they’ve only bought a division and not an entire company but I do expect there will be some redundancies and duplication of posts so I’d be more concerned about those who really got shafted by this.

Autodesk was always powerful. With complete ownership now of the top 3 production packages (no, LW and C4d are not a substitute), they have the power to casually destroy any ancillary production software by not supporting it, or actively interfering with its compatibility.

My curiosity is now is whether they go after Pixologic, or simply choose to destroy it in favor of Mudbox.

Ive never been more depressed.

#133

So many childish rants…Softimage had no futur under Avid. Point. Full Stop.

#134

behold the future

ok this was just stupid:rolleyes:

#135

Probably Because Adobe has a good reputation and Connection with MAXON, buying XSI would buy like giving a big Middle Finger to your Good Buddy and sleeping with his whorish sister, no?

#136

Best Post Ever.

#137

This I did not know. Thanks for the colorful analogy

#138

LOL
awesome analogy:buttrock:

#139

Actually, Adobe is 2.5x bigger than Autodesk, 13.26B$ vs 5.16B$ in market cap.

But both are elephants in the room of software companies, eg Avid the parent company of softimage is < 0.6 B$.

From my point of view, Softimage flourished under Avid. I’ve been following it since version 1.5, and each iteration has been absolutely fantastic. I don’t think that anyone is ranting here either. People will understandably have misgivings when the future of their favorite software, and sometimes breadwinner, is cast into doubt.
