It’s only a matter of time
Autodesk Signs Agreement with Avid Technology to Acquire Softimage
Is it not illegal to own Monopoly?
I think it was Coca Cola that had to go to court for owning to much of the market, so they could not buy out a new drink, i dont remember which one sorry.
So i hope this will be the same for Autodesk, sure they are not allowed to own everything as its against the law.
Anyways in the end i dont see having one application with a drop down menu with all versions into one.
But i do not want autodesk to buy more companies it breaks the market and technology will slow down.
Exactly, i don’t understand why nobody stops these kind of deals. As you said, technology and innovations will be slowed down if one big company holds all the cards. Prices go up and so on… growls Blast…
That is the way Capitalism works. Every company is for sell if they havent bought Maxon or LW is becuase they dont have any usefull tools that AD will benefit form it.
That is like saying oh no why all the major TV channels in the US are owned by a single coorporation, that is not fare.
In 2008 Siggraph’s title was " Siggraph 2008 Evolve". In 2009 It’s dropping the name Siggraph and Changing it to Autograph, with the moto being " Autograph 2009 Acquire". Funny when you think about it in a few years it will be a Autodesk show.
something that’s just struck me…
softimage always resold XSI in the UK at a very competitive price when it came to exchange rates. autodesk, as we all know, resells max at an enormous mark-up in the UK.
what’s to stop them assigning the same pricing model to XSI now? I think we can easily expect significant price-hikes for XSI if this is the case.
i still have my old XSI hoodie jumper from the 3Democracy days. It’s a bit manky and has a few cig burn holes in it but I’m keeping it!
“So this is how democracy, er, competition ends. To thunderous applause, er, takeovers.”
Want a Drambuie?
Let’s say you run Autodesk and you decide to kill two or maybe one of the big three apps. to consolidate your resources. Which would you cut and drop?
For me the first on the chopping block would be Max but I doubt Autodesk would kill their favourite child. As a Maya user and a freelancer all this makes me nervous.
i’ve got to agree with what someone said earlier, $35 million is nothin in the world of business these days, why did no one step up and buy it, i’m sure even a few of the biggest studios could of chipped into together or a movie company or someone, dam if i had $35 millions iwould of bought it, autodesk are not to blame, they saw an oppotunity. blame the people who owned maya, mudbox, xsi, etc for selling
Guess that makes C4D, Blender and Animation master the “small Gallic
village” ( if you know “Asterix” ) in the cgi-industry.
Only these packages can be really compared, since their packages offer all major aspects of 3D animation at an affordable price for me.
For the moment I stick with A:M.
I agree its kind of an island, but not because of the stubborness of ist
developers, but simply out of technical incompabilities that can not be
overcome.
(the endless discussions and missunderstandings about this topic in
this forum here, made Hash close down their forum-section here at cg-talk.)
But nowadays its solid stable, cheap and covers all aspects I need.
If you get acustomed to its spline-modeling its almost like drawing.
And it has very good free rigging tools and very good animation capabilities and an invaluable helpfull user-comunity!
So autodesk waited until avid developed ICE, and then jumped right at it? They should have sed that money to develop somethin og their own. Who the hell needs anaglyph view in maya? was that kind of thing crucial?
Some said xsi people were quite happy with the buyout. Now the question is how happy are the guys at former Alias? How are they? Joe Stam and his team, for example…
I am afraid!
will Autodesk acquire my home and my car too?
no, it will buy your country!
People you are missing out a lot of other 3d app. Not as complete with a modelers, animation and rendering. But who that does 3d high end uses one single pacakge.
35 millions right now to invest in a 3d software is very risky. IMOP. Only people that has to declare any type of investment will do something like that. WHo knows what else they are covering.
aight aight, we are all nervous, but please don’t start a war in this thread. Between 1st world crysis and this AD–XSI afair, the line between fun and not fun just got a little thinner.
